Right on, keep it at this speed and we'll see 10GB Mini's in no-time, right? Anyway, the 6GB edition of the Carbon will costs $ 229.99 (MSRP) and it's said to become available June 1st, 2005. Seems like it's going to be the same color as the Rio Audio Pearl - the pearl-white edition of the Carbon."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/carbon_6gb.jpg" /><br /><br />Nice.

I also noticed that it is not 'plays for sure' subscription compatible. I wonder what is taking so long with the firmware updates that support Napster to go.

I have been looking for a flash player to jog with that is napster to go compatible. So far Rio says the Forge will be...but the firmware updates have been taking forever.

Doesn't the carbon use a CF microdrive? So does this mean that a 6GB MD can be harvested from this thing? For only $240 USD?

Subscription-capable players need specific on-board hardware in the form of a non-user-accessible real-time clock. Pre-janus hardware is unlikely to be flash-upgradeable to janus-compatibility. This was made clear long before Janus was released.

As of now, none of the Rio players are subscription capable.
Too bad, cause they are excellent players in every other way.
You may want to check out the Samsung, Creative, or iRiver lines for subscription-capable players. Maybe they have one with the right mix of features and ergonomics.

6 GB is the biggest 1" drive on the market, so it's not "puny". Devices this small can't use the big 1.8" drives that come in 40+ GB sizes. If you want big storage, you have to get a bigger device. ;-)

I doubt it - last I heard other device manufacturers were changing the pinouts slightly to prevent the re-use of the hard drive...

From Rio's website: Q: Do any Rios work with the new Napster To Go service?
A: Only Rio players like the Carbon, Ce, Forge and newer are eligible for support for Napster To Go.

Please visit www.rioaudio.com for updates. There will be a future firmware update to add support for Napster's new subscription service. The updates are expected to be released in the Spring of 2005.

This has been on the site for about 6 months.
