I'm in the process of transferring some videos from VHS tapes to DVDs. I know that -R was created first and has wider compatibility than +R. Is there any reason why I shouldn't pick -R over +R?

No reason why you shouldn't, and in fact, probably more reasons why you should.

If you're looking for compatibility with 'standard' home DVD-players (i.e. the ability to stick your home movies into Grandma's DVD player) then the -R format is closest to the commercial DVD standard. This doesn't guarantee it will work in all DVD players, but you're generally in the 85 to 95% range, especially with the newer players.

but DVD+R has many more superiorities over DVD-R.its defect management , faster recording speed,eg. should be counted, and its only demerit maybe the bit higher-priced dishware
