Can Dual Layer DVD's Play on Standard Players?

I burned a Dual Layer dvd with about 7gb of data and then put it in a standard dvd drive. To my surprise the files showed up. Now there were a lot of files so I didn't look to see if they were all there and readable but it made me wonder if video burned onto a DL dvd will play on a standard player.

They should, it's part of the DVD spec.

I don't remember all the details, but I thought the booktype just needed to be set as DVD Video, and if your player will play single layer discs of +R or -R then it should play the dual layer.
