<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.superbowl.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.superbowl.com/</a><br /><br /></div>Enjoying the Superbowl?! I figured it would be cool to start a thread to talk about the big event, already in progress. In the past there have been some amazing digital media related technologies tried out during the game. The one that most prominently comes to mind is EyeVision - Carnegie Mellon's special effects project for SuperBowl boadcast, tried out in 2001. Anything special you see this year?<br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/hdr_left_122204.jpg" /><br /><br />And of course there are the ads. The most interesting/amusing one I have seen so far is the Bud Light skydiving ad. Which ones have you liked?

I was practically on the floor with the Diet Pepsi-P Diddy ad. That was funny. The Lincoln Fry ad from McDonald's was good as well. Too bad McDonald's is evil...

The new Olympus portable jukebox looked cool. I went to the wesite, www.olympusgroove.com to check it out. It's kind of expensive for a 20GB jukebox at $499, but it includes a camera and a picture viewer.

The camera appears to be only 1MP, judging from the specs so I don't really see that as anything really must have. I'd rather have a really cool portable juekbox withought all the other stuff. They do have one without the camera and picture viewer, but it's only 5GB and costs $249. It's got a cool touch panel but about $250 for a 5GB portable jukebox is a bit high...

Too bad it seems to fall short, because the touch panel is a really cool innovation.

We're working on a review of the MR-100 (the 5GB model). It's pretty slick. Right now, we're waiting for a new unit (the one they sent was a pre-production model). Look for the full review soon. In the meantime, check out this review (http://www.dapreview.net/content.php?review.149).

The price doesn't seem too bad to us. It's in "line" with the Creative Zen Micro and Apple iPod Mini. You're paying for style but with the style of the MR-100, it just might be worth it. It's been fun showing this off to friends. They all tend to drool. ;)

If they take out the camera and leave everything else, I'll be interested.
That screen is droolworthy...

Most tasteful, most appropriate, and best-conceived:
The anheuser busch "Thank you" ad with the returning veterans.

Honorable mention: Napster. Practically a public service. ;-)

Funniest: Ford mustang convertible.
Second funniest: the french cheese-thieves...

I have to say the funniest ads I have seen so far are the "Don't judge too quickly" ads. They are so funny that I dont even remember what the commercials are for!

Well, I did say "a bit" :) ... I'd prefer more gigs. I have a Dell Jukebox with 20GB and it's about half full now. I really do like the styling of the larger one, I just don't need another digicam and photo viewer. Maybe they'll come out with a stripped down version with a huge hard drive. :D

I have to say that the Ameriquest dinner/cat killing ad is as good as that Bud Light skydiving ad that I mentioned before. :)

No doubt! Olympus has done their homework on style. But I'd love to see something in between these two devices with a higher capacity. I've also heard that the MR-500 touch screen interface is hard to use for music. It comes with a an in-line remote to make it easier to flip between songs. Sounds like a shame to me.

OK, back to watching the game.

I'll give funniest thus far to the ameriquest 'don't judge too quickly' cat ad, followed by the bud light skydiving ad.

I had to look away, I can't wait for the movie and I will have to try hard to stay away from all the spoilers.

The Napster service only offers wmv format, right? I just don't like the way wmv's sound compared to mp3 or aac format. Besides, in five years I'll still own my itms music, without having to continue paying for the service.

OTOH, decent competition drives innovation.

My biggest complaint with Napster To Go is that they support such a small number of players. We can only hope that since this is such a new service, more players will be added. Of course, tons more discussion on this in the Napster-to-go thread (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7664&amp;highlight=).

I have to say the Bud Light Sky diving &amp; the "Kill the Cat" ads are were the two best. Both made me burst out laughing.

The BEST ad hands down was "Thank You"

Has anybody ever experienced that kind of spontaneous appreciation for our troops?

The funniest commercial was Bud Light's Sky Diving commercial.

I missed the thank you ad, but my wife and I caught the FedEx Kinkos ad and nearly fell off the couch laughing, especially when the kick to the groin happened.

The P. Diddy ad with Pepsi was great too, especially considering P. Diddy's penchant for fancy entrances to award shows (anyone remember the semitrailer entrance to the MTV VMAs?)

Reading your discussions on the Super Bowl ads makes me think: how many of you watch the Super Bowl for the ads? ;)

Btw, anyone know of a repository of the Super Bowl ads where I can catch up with the ads you are talking about...

Here! 8)

I don't watch football of either variety (gridiron or soccer) but I will from time to time put on the bowl as white noise as I read.
I look up for the commercials and turn away when the fat boys take the screen...

What I *am* looking forward to is the start of Sports season in ten days or so... ;-)

You wound me, sir!
I shill for no one!
They couldn't afford me, even if I were available.
(As michael Douglas said in ROMANCING THE STONE; "I can be had, but I ain't cheap.")

I just like to see new business models get proper exposure.
The more people hear of it, the more will start thinking about the possibilities.
That's how paradigms get shifted, bit by bit...
And that's why I called it a public service announcement; it highlights some of the unexploited possibilities of digital media...

I have my own axe to grind but its not in the music subscription arena.
However, success of subscriptions (whether by Napster, Musicmatch or Rhapsody is irrelevant) is a necessary pre-requisite for what I *really* want to see; asynchronous tv-publishing. (Long dissertation/rant hidden in those three words).

The future is being built around us every single minute and the slightest nudge can have far-reaching consequences. Which is why I singled out the returning veterans ad; it says tons about this moment in US history and, given the worldwide audience of the bowl and the ads, sends a not-so-subtle message. The 60's are long gone.

Like it or not, its the 21st century out there...
Lead, follow, or get the heck out of the way applies to many things in and out of digital media.

Yeah, I particularly liked the 'dead' cat one in the don't judge series. It cracked me up.

I also had a thought after watching the GoDaddy ad (it was hard to think about math during), that a $2.4 million 30 second spot represents 300,000 domain name registrations (at $8 each). How can they afford that?
