Epson is currently manufacturing 1080p panels at both 1.3-inch and 0.9-inch panel sizes. The RPTV shown was using 0.9 inch panels that support true 1920x1080p resolution. The light engine also supports 12-bit color. This differs from TI's approach, where TI's xHD3 DMD arrays actually address two pixels with each mirror, so the micromirror chip resolution is considerably less than the full 1920x1080p. Subjective image quality of the prototype unit looked sharp and colorful in show floor conditions, but the potential for low-cost, true 1080p RPTVs is what's really exciting. Epson expressed hopes that 1080p units could be available by Fall of 2005."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/epson_1080p.jpg" /><br /><br />Sure this seems impressive, but content providers are having trouble producing quality HD feeds as it is now, so how can we expect them to support 1080p? Demo movies are one thing, but the day we see 1080p offered by broadcasters might be very far in the future.
