I do think the problem, from a machine learning point of view, is incredibly hard and it would probably produce decent results for a front facial view (like I have seen working in a lot of Computer Vision based systems) but may not work very well of a face from an arbitrary angle and with arbitrary lighting. I am still rooting for the technology though, it would make cataloging images so much easier.
