Some of you will remember earlier this year I ordered a 56" Samsung DLP, then cancelled the order the next day, because that generation of TVs had some issues and a new one was just around the corner. Well, little did I know that it takes 6+ months for Samsung to release the same models in Canada that they have in the US. Then, when I finally thought my wait was over, I was told that the particular model I wanted (a 3rd generation 56" thin-bezel Tantus DLP) was never going to come to Canada. Augh! 8O

I looked around at a few other choices - a Toshiba DLP, a Hitachi LCD TV, and a few others...but the Samsung kept drawing me back. So even though regular TV looks like crap on it, and even though most things I see on the screen make me think I'm watching a low bit rate video streaming off the Internet, I ordered it anyway. The signal quality will catch up eventually, and then it will be a REALLY good TV. 8)

Hey Jason,

That's funny you mention that DLP, because I've been helping my mom build a new entertainment center for her home (which is beginning to turn out very nice, if I do say so myself, and no, I don't live with my mom  ), and I helped her purchase the new Samsung 61" HLP6163W DLP from TV Authority through the PowerBuy opportunity off of AVS Forums. Got a really great price, and a free XBox along with it.

It's a very nice TV. I had her buy a line conditioner as well, so that, along with silver-based video cables and interconnects, Comcast HD signal, and the other really nice equipment I had her purchase, the TV should really perform well. (I have yet to set everything up, but I'll keep you posted when I have it all finished).

I think you'll be really happy with it. The funny thing about DLP's, though, is that in many ways, they're much like a computer inside, and the fans can emit a bit of a high pitched whirr that may or may not be annoying to you. My mom, myself, and others noticed it. But since then, I think we've all adjusted to it because we don't really notice it much at all anymore. I've learned that high pitched fan whirr is often due to vibration and little else. When I had the TV on her carpet, I couldn't hear it at all, but once I set the TV onto the new stand I had her buy, it was noticable. So if you place your TV off of the floor and onto a stand (which you most likely will due to the size of the TV), you may opt to placing a piece of carpeting or floor rubber onto your stand, and then set the TV onto that. This should help absorb the vibration and reduce the whirr a fair amount.

Enjoy your new TV!

I'm very happy with my Sammy 5063 --- now that the problems have been fixed. It is working flawlessly and with a beautiful picture in HD. Check this site for the issues that had people concerned about the XX63 series DLPs:

Don't know if you get these stateside but here in Australia we have an LG 62" DLP Rear Pro with built in HD Tuner. I work in a retail Home Theater store so we have had quite a few of these DLPs in as well as of course LCD Rear Pros. I find DLPs a bit on the dark side. Picture is good in HD and DVD but good old VHS is a no go. Don't know about the fan noise as in the store we wouldn't be able to hear it. Though no customer has complained about it yet. It comes with a free stand so I assume they put their DLPs on it as it is quite a nice silver stand. We had HD horse racing on it on Saturday and it looked awesome. Massive picture. Better than the old 60" LCD that it replaces. Though the old 60" did have some Farrujah (Spelling?) line doubling incorporated in it. The average goon that comes in the store is wary of DLP as they haven't heard of it and still think plasma is the way to go. Personally we think plasma is on it's way out and LCD flat panels are starting to be more popular. For my money I'd have the LG DLP 62". Built in HD can't go wrong. Though I've got a 4:3 old Pioneer 50" rear pro that still has a nice picture. Made in Japan to so it's quite a rarity.
When it dies the DLP will be my choice.

Thanks Escape, for that link. Good source of info there.

It's too bad that so many people have been struggling with the Sammy sets, but at least they're getting them fixed. Seems when problems arise, replacing the entire light engine is the way to go.

I was also interested to hear about some of the video audio sync problems some people were having, I'm assuming only when using the TV with an AV receiver. It seems the trick there is to set the internal audio on the TV to "OFF" and let the AV receiver handle the syncing. Good to know.

And from what I read, it seems the high pitched whirr that some people have may not be the fans. It could be the color wheel.

So there was a lot of good info there just on one page of that site.

Damn you all and your awesome big-screen TVs. They are all way too large for my living room, in fact with such setups there would be very little living going on in my living room.
