"The Compact Flash Association has approved version 3.0 of the CompactFlash specification, increasing throughput to 66 Megabytes per second and adding support for DMA. Current flash chip technology maxes out at 12 megabytes per second, so the I/O of the data bus is no longer a bottleneck. Direct Memory Access (DMA) support should also improve performance and reduce battery life, as it allows the storage device (the CF card) to talk directly to the host device's RAM without going through the processor, reducing the time and power load on the processor. The new version of the specification uses UltraDMA 33 and UltraDMA 66 interface modes, both originally developed for IDE hard disks in desktop computers, to achieve higher data throughput using existing and vetted designs."

Great news! 8) Flash media is becoming a bottleneck for those trying to use almost anything from digital cameras to mp3 players. Also it appears that the Compact Flash Association is also recommending that all CompactFlash devices support FAT32 so that storage sizes can grow above the 2.2GB limitation of FAT16.
