That's an average of five movies — at least 10 hours of filmmaking, not counting all those extras — sitting on the shelf, perhaps still in their wrappers. But it's not just a matter of time. Consumers are so taken with DVDs that they are buying them simply as vanity items, knowing full well that they might never watch them."</i><br /><br />This article talks about how the DVDs that a person owns serves as a window into their personality, and I agree. You can tell a lot about a person by looking at the movies they've purchased, just as you can tell a lot about a person by their computer desktop, office desk, and other personal zones. What would your DVD collection say about you if I were to look at it?

OMG that is me!!! I have a little over 200 DVD's and haven't watched about 20 of them, in fact they are still in cellophane! Some of my favorites that I HAVE watched that I bought:

LOTR (all of them)
National Geographic" Making of LOTR Fellowship
The Goonies
Sixteen Candles
Breakfast Club
Singles

I guess that means I am a"Gen X/Tolkien Geek"

I guess it would say i'm cheap...

We buy a lot of our movies used at Hollywood video. You can usually get 3 for 25 or 30 dollars. New releases go for sale about 2 or 3 weeks after coming out for rental.

That I'm a huge nerd. I have a lot of Sci-Fi.

I've got about 30 (counting multiple DVD sets as 1) and haven't watched about 7 of them yet.

I have about 50-60 DVDs and there is only one AFAIK I haven't watched. It is Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The only reason I haven't watched it yet is because I have probably memorized it by now after watching it on tape or cable so many times. I just figured I should have the DVD copy just because I love the movie so much.

I'd say 10% not watch sounds about right for me. I have about 300 DVDs (counting sets as one item). I have not updated this in about a month, so add say another 5-10 items. Feel free to analyze my personality. :D I'll start, I must be extremely anal to keep a list like this.

What would your DVD collection say about you if I were to look at it?

That I'm really, really into quantum physics.

(Or that I don't exist.)

What would your DVD collection say about you if I were to look at it?

That I think people who need to display their DVD's in fancy boxes in their living rooms need to get a life. You'd figure that out by looking at the unruly stack sitting on the floor behind my TV. I've watched every DVD I own, though sometimes it'll take me a month or so to get to a new one that I've picked up impulsively. It's not a large collection, though. I only buy DVDs if: 1) I really love the movie (not that many of those), or 2) I like the movie and it's on sale for &lt;$10.

Kent Pribbernow

I guess I'm the odd man out here because I don't have a DVD collection. The hobby of buying and collecting movies has never held much interest for me because once I view a movie I no longer desire to watch it again. And when the rare occasion occurs that I do wish to watch reruns, I rent them.

Call me crazy, but buying movies seems like a waste of money. :?

Well now you're talkin my language. I LIVE on The History Channel. But even then I usually read books on the subject matter that interest me. I have an entire library of history books and classic literature. Yes, it's true...I'm an elitist snob. It comes with being a Mac user.

Now go watch your movies....peasants! :P

Ok - this thread has officially been hijacked into the "what is in my dvd collection" thread :D

I must say I am guilty of not watching a few of the movies in my collection, but that is mainly due to the fact I have an 8-month-old at home and the free time has disappeared.

Oh, and if you are interested, my collection is at http://www.intervocative.com/dvdcollection.aspx/JTWise

It covers a wide range, mainly due to different tastes between me and my wife.

I guess mine would say that I am a nerdy degenerate gambler sports fan.

Everything seems to fall into 3 categories.

1) It has a space ship in it
2 & 3 overlap somewhat
2) Its a sports movie
3) Its about gambling and/or Las Vegas.

Summed up like this it seems a little disturbing :)

Jumping the gun a bit on Star Wars 4-6 though aren't you?

Actually, I got them on eBay a long time ago. They're from Asia I think. A friend of mine put me on to them. I'm pretty sure they're conversions from the LaserDisc. Either way, they're pretty good (I don't think they're DVD quality though).

Still, I've got the DVD's on pre-order at Amazon for next month's release! ;)

I'll need to check Ebay out. From what I have heard, the original theatrical version won't be available on DVD. I don't mind the new footage, but part of me just wants to watch the old versions. I have refrained from watching the VHS versions to much to preserve them, and I did attempt to copy them to my Panasonic DVD recorder/PVR, but the copy guard stoped me.

JR
08-29-2004, 04:31 AM
That's why I got them exactly. The quality is pretty good (as good as VHS at least) and there's no ''Lucas tinkering" to contend with.

When I heard that he was planning to change the original trilogy (i.e. adding Jar-Jar to A New Hope), I knew I had to get them.

Hmm - I'm similar to Kent. I've got 2 (yep, count 'em, 2!) DVDs - (1) The Matrix (1st DVD I bought, just needed a film to try out the DVD drive on the computer and it was a cool film [I'm just ignoring the rubbish follow-ups in the trilogy!] and (2) Fawlty Towers [2 DVD box set] - because they're absolutely hilarious and I happily watch them multiple times!

Never really bought many VHS videos either (about 10 maybe?) - tend to just rent the film if I want to see it. Quite like the new postal rental firms too.

Cheers

I suppose Kent and I would be opposites on this one - I have almost 900 DVDs and have watched all of them multiple times. Other than I've got a lot of money tied up in the collection, I'm not sure what it says about me as I've got at least some of almost every genre.
