So, while on vacation I dropped my S110. Needless to say, it no longer works! I called Canon, and as it is out of warranty, the best I can hope for is a $150.00 repair bill. They also said I can upgrade to a refurb S400 for $200.00 if I turn in my dead camera. The S400 new is about $580.00 and used is about $380.00...

So my question is: should I go for the refurb or just start looking for a new camera???

The S400 is a good camera - a worthy successor to the S110 - but I don't know enough about US pricing to know whether or not that's a good deal. $200 USD for the S400 seems like a great deal though, since you won't be using the S110 for anything....

FWIW - Several places (B&H Photo, Mike's Cameras in Boulder Colorado, etc.) sell the S410 for $400 new.

Steve, looking on PriceGrabber, there are some merchants selling the S410 (new) for less than 300 buckeroonies!!

I'm thinking of getting one for my daughter, she lives in the UK where these things are very expensive. I want to get her a simple to use point and shoot that is small and takes good pictures - the S410 seems to fit nicely.

Yeah, djh is right. I just looked on http://www.bensbargains.net and it is selling (new) for about $279. BTW, are you looking for a compact camera like the S410? And what kind of megapixel range are you looking for?

Thanks everyone!

I'm looking for similar FF, P&S: very easy to carry and use! As far as megapixel range goes, the more the merrier (I have dealt with 2.1 for so long, anything will be an improvement)

I really do like the Powershot cameras! I managed to get 5,800 pics out of my s110 before the accident. It's a solid little performer (provided you don't drop it, that is) So now I'm torn between getting a refurb or just going out and buying new. Anyone have any experience with refurb Canons?

Decisions, decisions...

I have never really buy a refurbished camera but are you sure you would trust one. I mean it will look and feel like new but whenever I have ever had a defective product that I had to send back to a manufacturer who would then replace it with a refurbished product, I just wasn't too comfortable. And is the price difference really that high?

BTW, have you thought about the Powershot S500 as well? And talking about other brands, some of the new Pentax cameras look very nice as well.

I really can't afford to spend a ton (for me anyway) of money. The only other thing is that I want to make sure that whatever I get will take CF. I have a bunch of CF cards (that were/are used in both my Digital Camera and also my Pocket PC)

Yeah, then the Pentax cameras would be out. And the S500 is still a bit expensive. So the S410 may be the sweet spot for you.

Probably the Canon if you want to stick to CF. Most of the market has migrated to SD already.
