Hitachi flat-panel TVs the receiver in a separate box. In the high-end models, the receiver will feature a hard-drive based DVD recorder. Hitachi plans to release three plasma screens with sizes between 32 and 42 inches as well as two LCD screens."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/hitachiplasma.jpg" /><br /><br />I wonder what the pricing on the plasma models is going to be like since LCD TVs appear to be making a big splash and generally have the better picture quality. Has anyone invested in plasma screens?

Not sure about the US but LCD's are still very much more expensive over here in the UK. I wonder if we ever will have parity in the pricing between plasma and lcd ?

Oh and I have a Panasonic PWD6 plasma and I'm enjoying the Olympics on it as I type.

I wrote off plasma displays outright as a candidate technology for my (upcoming) HDTV buy so I'm not 100% up-to-date on their pricing, but the last I looked the plasmas were more expensive than comparable size-and-resolution LCD displays. Partly because most plasma displays are native EDTV rather than native-HDTV. In fact, I don't think I've seen more than a couple plasmas that are native 720p, while most LCDs are native 720p.

With the melange of broadcast-formats on this side of the pond high native-resolution is a bit more critical here. The recent introduction of native 1080p LCDs is probably a sign of where that technology is going to end up, I think. Ideally, one would want native 2160p, but that is likely a ways off; probably next decade... :)

Oooo don't start the HDTV thing :D - we have got to wait till at least 2005/06 before we might just get a sniff of a single HDTV channel.

Oooh, sorry...
And here I thought *our* bureaucracy was slow...
Would've thought at least Star would be offering *some* HD content...
That's one reason Murdoch bought DirectTV round these parts...
