View Full Version : Want to Win that Shuttle ST62K? Here's Your Chance...

Ok gang, today is your lucky day: remember that Shuttle ST62K that everyone was lusting over? Well, since the person I contacted two weeks ago still hasn't gotten back to me to claim their prize (here's a hint: don't use Hotmail accounts for your contact email, they're unreliable), guess what that means? It's up for grabs, and you frequent visits will have the best chance of winning it!

So here are the rules: you have until Friday at noon (MT) to post one message, and ONLY one message in this thread telling me how you'd use the ST62K. Would it be your main computer? A media centre machine attached to a TV? A quiet Web server? Would you give it to your mom? It doesn't matter what your reason is, I just need you to give me one. Post once in this thread, and that's it. On Friday at noon mountain time (GMT -7) I'll randomly pick one person from this thread and they'll win the sublimely cool Shuttle ST62K. Remember: one post per person.

Because I recently stopped lusting fully after a shuttle to lust over a tablet pc, I'd give it to my dad, and help him set it up as the digital media centric pc he's always wanted but couldn't afford.

Funny you should mention the Mom thing; that's exactly what I would do. If I won this, I would give it to my Mom and buy her a nice LCD display to go with it. She's using a very old laptop, but doesn't have room for a big computer, and this would be perfect for her small apartment.

I would use it as a media center and a web server. I currently use Beyond TV and Beyond Media to handle my PVR needs. However it currently resides on my only computer in my room. Compared to my computer. This computer is nice and small and has all the features that I need to run Beyond TV on the TV where it belongs. As for the web server. Well Beyond TV has web server built in to share video across the network and also being a web developer nothing is better then real world senarios. Also I can finally get rid of the 25-ft cabled that run from my computer to the TV downstairs. :)

No special reason. I'd just look forward to owning hardware that is newer than 2000.

I'd use it to finally set up that media PC I keep putting off. Always seems like there's a new Pocket PC or phone i want that bumps this out of the top spot. :D

The Shuttle just screams to be a media centre connected to a tv and sterio system, in addition to a backup drive (partition) for all those digital photos, as optical media just doesn't leave me warm and fuzzy. I actually recommended to my mother that she should consider a Shuttle system to record her daily soap opera and get rid of all the VHS tapes, but she just isn't ready for this technology quite yet

Thanks for the second chance Jason!

Well, I would use a shuttle PC as the first desktop I have actually used in a while. My old desktop is now a family PC, so I don't end up getting much use out of it anymore.

I will use it as a Linux box to aid in programming and to function as a small file server. I hope I get it.. :)

Replace my aging Shuttle SV24 - the 1st SFF.

My proposed use would be to set it up in a media center-ish role, serving up music and movies for my child when he/she arrives in a few months.

08-04-2004, 06:24 AM
I would set my Shuttle up as a digital TV (DVB-C) set-top box with PVR features and maybe as Windows Media streaming server so that I can watch *cough* important sporting events on my Pocket PC over GPRS/WiFi. Ahh, that would be the Nirvana of Multimedia Technologies. :D

Alternatively, (if I can afford this idea -- which seems unlikely right now) I would buy a large screen LCD TFT -- like those sweet Dell screens Jason showed us -- and sell my old analog TV altogether... 8)

Good Luck to everyone participating! ;)

My use for the Shuttle would be for a great gaming system. It would be great for all of the LAN party weekends that i get myself into ( damn FPSs!!!!!) With a great custom carrying case, i will definitely make an entrance at the next LAN party. Plus my back wont ache as much from moving my much larger computer around all the time. Please Jason Save my aching back here!!!!! :D :D :D

Alternately, i would use as the core of a home server. It would the center of my home entertainment system(PVR, DVD, home stereo, gaming etc) as well as hosting all of my files for wireless access anywhere in my home. Imagine the kids watching a recorded show on their computer while i watch a movie on it while a home movie or a slideshow is being accessed somewhere else. I know i know its a lot to ask from this Shuttle but im sure that this unit is up to it.

Anyway thats my idea(s)

I would use it as my main PC because the one I'm using right now is the one I bought 7 years ago for college! It's a Pentium II 233 mHz with only 4 MB video RAM! Top of the line back then....

Philip Colmer

I'd use it as a quiet server. Having just got broadband, I want to avoid turning my main PC into a 24x7 system.

I will use it as a media centre, PVR, photos and video storage. Then I can start lusting after the 71 inch LG LCD TV. I will also use it to stream music and video via WiFi to a tablet PC mounted on my powerchair. That will be so cool.

i'd use it as a super quiet machine to record digital music from and to my sound board. it would definately beat an old ugly rackmount.

I'd use it as a server/footrest. ;)

I would love to be able to have the ST62K. Then I can finally move my loud fulltower outside of my bedroom and be able to study and sleep in peace and quiet. I like cleaniness, simpleness and silence but my current setup affords me none of those things. The plans for this SFF computer would be to purchase an affordable CPU and memory. Next would probably be either a 250 or 300GB hard drive. After that comes the DVD-ROM drive and memory card reader for the 3.5" slot. Finally a nice set of wireless keyboard and mouse to complete it. This may also be the time to pick up a nice 20" LCD.

Then I would transfer my digital photo collection over to this puppy, hook up some speakers and start working on the ~1,500 photos from last months trip to Russia.

This system would become my everyday web browing, photo editing, media playing, work station. My current system would then become the file/media server, game station and guest computer.

Yes I can't wait to get rid of this hurricane of a system...

I gotta throw my hat in (although I never win anything).

When I win the 'puter, it will become a doorstop for the pantry. . . No, that's not right. . .

Actually, I have been wanting to build a nice mediacenter PC (like almost all of the other posts). The small form factor and reduced fan noise of the Shuttle is perfect (my budget is not). I want to be able to pipe video and music between the living room and the "computer room." The fact that I don't have a machine in the living room is puting a crimp in my plans.

Good luck to me

I would use it as a media center PC and to make all my friends jealous 8)

08-04-2004, 01:22 PM
Initially just use it as a second PC to reduce the current family squabbles over who gets to use the existing one! Maybe then investigate all that connecting it up to the TV/stereo shennanigins.

Richard OKane
08-04-2004, 01:22 PM

I'd get an external HDTV tuner, add in some WiFi, put all my MP3's on it and turn it into a media hub for my house.

08-04-2004, 01:43 PM
I would like to use it as a tool in my community service work to help me feed the poor and sick children in the country who desperately need, not only my help, but everyone's help. After all, they are everyone's responsibility and part of all of our futures.

Or I'll use it as a Media Center/File Server to stream downloaded internet porn to my TV! :D

P.S.
I called dibbs on it in the original thread!

Well if you been reading my posts you may notice I favor Apple products. However what you may not know (or care about even :) ) is that I also have to work in the PC world.

Now if I were to win this machine it would be a companion computer for me where it would replace my main PC rig. This would be good for me as I fear I haven't kept my current beast up to speed and it is a little long in the tooth.

Anyways, that is why I would like to win this PC. (Plus I miss the games, curse you doom!)

I'd try to set this up to replace my old TiVo.

Citezein
08-04-2004, 01:58 PM
This would be the ultimate tiny server. I could finally get rid of my Celeron-based house server and get something that had some speed. Plus, it would take up half of the space! This would rock!

Kevin & Beth Remhof

This would give us a great excuse to build a media PC. Or heck, we could finally put together the MAME cabinet we've been dreaming of...

hang5lngbd
08-04-2004, 02:01 PM
I would load Windows Media Center on it and attach it to my HDTV.

Perry Reed
08-04-2004, 02:01 PM
I'd love to make it a media center PC, but since we already have two DirecTiVo units, it'd probably replace my old PIII 500 as my desktop PC/web server. It sure would be nice to have a good little gaming PC, though!

Rikostan
08-04-2004, 02:10 PM
Oh oh I would love to win this!
I would use it as a media server in the living room. We take a ton of pics and movies of our three kids to show our aging relatives and most of them do not like to go near my computer room, so this would allow me to show them on the living room TV.
I would also use it as a MP3 server, since the TV has a decent surround sound system on it.
Thanks for the chance!

The old desktop my daughter has been using gave up the ghost last month. With school less than a month away, I've moved my computer into her room. I am currently putting money aside for its eventual replacement.

With the Shuttle I would finally have the nerve to actually build a PC myself. The thought that I could have a quiet system running in the work nook/closet of my bedroom would definitely be a bonus.

I'd set it up as a media/center server for my mother and hook up a Windows Media Extender box as the front end.
I'll have to do something like that sooner or later cause DirectTV isn't offering PVRs in her area yet.
And I'll probably end up building the server PC cause I never win anything.
Cue the violins...now! ;-)

08-04-2004, 03:36 PM

I would definitely be using this as a media center PC. I've been extremely pleased with where HTPCs have been heading in the last few years, and I think now is the perfect time to have one.

This small quiet box would score big in the WAF* area too!

I think I would definately build a Media Centre for myself, and my old computer can go to my roommate. She's been saving up to replace a 233 that can't handle the online requirements for school (flash chemistry labs) and now it says there's no operating system so it's pretty much useless.

Media-Center PC, secondary browsing machine for when my wife uses or main system, and as my media server for the rest of the household.

The most appealing aspect of the system is how quiet it is. My wife hates my old system that I am currently using since it is so big and noisy.

Wow, a second chance at this beauty!

If I won the Shuttle ST62K, I would configure it as a way-cool media center PC. It would be great to actually have everything easily connected to the tv versus the current setup (i.e. cables running from different areas). At least this way I wouldn't keep tripping over the cable connecting my current pc to the stereo receiver so I can listen to mp3's and streaming audio on the stereo.

My wife worked 18 hours yesterday:

She has a crappy Dell D400 laptop provided by her employer and was trying to use it to see if their development team in China has fixed the bugs they were supposed to fix.... the crappy Dell has so little memory, 4200rpm hard drive, and such a slow processor, that it took ages and lots of page swapping to check each bug.

If I win I will use the Shuttle to make her a much faster PC, so I will get back at least 4 hours a day to spend with her.

Hi, I'm a college undergraduate in Computer Engineering, and I also love digital photography, and I want the Shuttle because while it's small, it's a good workstation replacement for my aging mATX PIII platform, and I love small computers as they take up less space in my tiny room. I'll be using it for programming projects and personal digital photography projects.

this computer would be given to my lovely wife to manage my new child's gallery and to replace her now dying PC.

She has been using an old computer that is on it's last legs and the hard drive is dying. It is so loud (and we have to keep it in the baby's room) that it has on occasion awoke my child.

I can not afford to replace it yet as she is still on maternity leave and our income was basically cut by a third.

This is how I would use the computer...
here is a little pic of my lovely wife and child.

Hi,
I was planning to build me a small form factor machine using the EPIA-MII10000/CCM01/LVDS01 with VIA C3 1GHz Nehemiah Processor,
BUT, if I can win a FREE Shuttle, I can use that too....

Here is what I envision:

-- Wirelessly connected to the existing high-speed home network
-- Music Server to stream music (via VLC server)
-- Video Server to stream video (via VLC server)
-- Yahoo/Shoutcast to stream radio streams
-- Access existing network and peripherals
-- Connected peripherals include WinTV PVR via PCI or USB, Wireless Gyro Mouse/Keyboard, digital camera, web cam, external HDD, desktop and photo printers, desktop computer, web server etc.
-- Video-out / VGA out to projector
-- MS Media Center software for PVR functionality
-- Access Photo/Video library
-- LCD panel doubles up as picture frame when idle

Here is a diagram illustrating my vision:

Please email me at [email protected] ([email protected]?subject=YOU HAVE WON the sublimely cool Shuttle ST62K...) if I win...

Not sure whether I would put a regular TV card or an HD card in it (or external HD solution). Regardless the card would have hardware encoding.

I have one of two uses in mind for this machine:
1) home theater system: since it's very quiet I figure this machine can live in the cabinet under the TV. This will become the DVD, MP3 player and will also give me access (through the TV) to airline info, weather, etc... Storing photos on it and using it as a web server at the same time are also possible since it's not going to be using much power most of the time.

2) Computer for my girlfriend: it's so small, cute and quiet, its a perfect machine for her. She's partially disabled and uses voice recognition software most of the time plus a plethora of alternative input devices including foot pedals, eye trackers, and graphics tablet. In total she's got 6 USB devices (when you count the mouse/keyboard(s) and the USB microphone/headset. With a 3.0GHz processor this could easily handle that load while still being quiet enough for the voice recognition to work properly.

...my power supply in my desktop shorted out and fried my motherboard, 3 hard drives, a dvd burner, and a dvd rom drive.

Besides the data I lost I am now down to an Ipaq 2215 and a 700 MHz Inspiron 4000 as my computing power.

So this Shuttle PC would give some real computing power and land in my entertainment center....if I can slip by my wife...

'cause I don't usually have time to read all details, I just took the time to look over the specs for this very nice and incredibly small all-in-one box. Looks like a LAN gamer box to me and that's what I'd use this for. I'd also get some sweet accessories like the bag, remote control and wireless dongel to beef it up a tad. It definitely has potential and it helps that Shuttle makes good stuff!

I'm going off to my freshman year at college within a month. My current system, although quite kick-arse with it's overcloced P4 and modded neon case, is loud when it's hot and it gets hot quickly. A well cooled SFF PC would save space in my dorm room (and be a chick magnet!).

I'm also very curious and enjoy learning. Although I repair desktops 60 hours a week as a summer job, I've gotten to build a system this small.

Good luck to the 16 pages (so far) of entries!

I have a soon-to-be-eight-year-old who has requested a computer for his room. Right now, he and his brother share a PC which is located in his brother's room. He's a great kid getting ready to enter the third grade. He continues to practice his reading and language skills as he is somewhat behind his peers due to undeterminant mild developmental delay. Otherwise he is a smart as a whip. He loves music and videos and can dance like no one else in the family.

Ordinarily, fulfilling his request would be only a minor hardship (we're a one-income family), but this year, we've been paying off debts when this same kid had to have his appendix suddenly removed, and when my father had a stroke and we assisted my parents in making things workable for when he came home.

I've always been intereseted in the Shuttle form factor for it's compact, but powerful qualities and believe that it would be a perfect addition to his room.

I tried giving my mom a system to keep in touch after my dad passed away but she said it was too big and she had no room for it. I dearly wish she had a system to get her "out" and interacting with folks again. She had many interests that I found newsgroups and websites for her that might help her cope and come out of the shell. This little guy would be just the ticket for a compact system she would not object to.

I am currently using an aging AMD Duron 700 based machine (overclocked to 900 Mhz, of course) as my Media Center PC. The Hauppauge PVR 250 card is the only thing that makes this possible, but I still get enough hiccups in playback (and the occasional random bluescreen/reboot) to make me wish I could afford something more substantial for this machine. For PVR software, I'm using SnapStream's BeyondTV 3, which is phenomenal. I love the transcoding feature, but again the slow processor in this machine makes it somewhat painful to use.

My wife couldn't understand why I wanted to buy a video card for a computer I was going to attach to the TV. Recently, circumstances caused us to have to spend a month away from home, and there wasn't a day when she had the remote in her hand that she didn't mention some form of frustration at not being able to pause live TV! But of course it's not enough of a priority to justify purchasing a new machine...

Ok, maybe a bit extreme, but I have been wanting a media PC to hook to my entertainment system and just haven't been able to justify the cash to myself or to my wife. For me it would have to be a MythTV based PVR. I did try making a PVR out of an old Duron, but it couldn't cope with encoding streams and the tower case it lived in wasn't really acceptable in the lounge. The shuttle would make a far better alternative - quieter, better looking, and powerful enough to do the job.

I am currently using an out-dated Dell machine (and I have finally accepted that I cannot upgrade it anymore). So, how would I use this new machine? Actually, I am not sure. My current machine is used by myself (when I have time), by my wife and our kids (a 13 and 16 yr old). Although my 16yr old son has his own machine and he loves to gloat about his machine. So, I guess having the Shuttle would allow me to one-up him  . My wife would tell you that I would probably turn it into a Media PC as I love to play with audio/video and computer equipment if I can afford it (which isn't often). If I did win this machine... I can guarantee that I would let you know how the machine was used once I had it.
Well, thanks for the opportunity anyhow.
