I discovered a really fantastic site that offers freeware that is very complicated to use but worth messing around with....It's a fractal generator -- it creates wonderous art forms from mathematical formulas, especially those associated with Chaos Theory (delineating the details of which earned John Nash, about whom "A Beautiful Mind" was written, the Nobel Prize in Mathematics.)
Fractal geometry mixes art with mathematics to demonstrate that equations are more than just a collection of numbers. With fractal geometry one can visually model much of what it is witnessed in nature. Rather like holograms that store the entire image in each part of the image, any part of a fractal can be repeatedly magnified, with each magnification resembling all or part of the original fractal. This phenomenon can be seen in objects like snowflakes and tree bark.
This freeware is an amazing program that opens up the world of fractal art creation to anyone, from the experimenting newcomer to the most mathematically advanced or computer-expert folks. There are scores of pre-established formulas to mix and match, or one can input a personalized mathemathical formula. Colors and other details are always up to the user. The fabulous designs that are generated by your PC are truly breathtaking.
