Microsoft is working on new digital photo archiving technology called "Triage" which organizes photos in clusters using metadata. But the really interesting aspect to this software is how it renders and manipulates image thumbnails. Watch the video and you'll see what I mean. Triage even helps transfer images to various types of devices like digital picture frames and Pocket PC handhelds.

The promise this technology delivers will mean easier photo management for the masses. Particularly for consumers who aren't very tech savvy. Very cool stuff! 8O

I know this will anger Adobe, Picasa and others, but...

THIS SHOULD BE BUILT INTO THE OS!

File management should be the job of the OS, not a third party app....

Couldn't agree more. I hate having to purchase software to fix OS shortcomings. It's like buying a brand new car and having to replace the inferior tires.

If this is how Aero is going to manage data files...
...I'm going to *like* Longhorn...

Now, if they would only get the darn thing finished!

Dang, that application looks great. The smoothness of the pictures and the graphics really helps you envision that your pictures are "physical" rather than "virtual."

I hope this technology makes it over to Windows XP eventually and that we won't have to wait for Longhorn to use that program.

For now, I'll stick to a program I love, iPhoto. :)

Very cool. Who has time to sort pictures by keywords anyway? I have Extensis Portfolio, Adobe's Album, and several other photo archive type software. However, I always end up searching by month and day. Photo Triage is a simple idea and visually appealing - are we sure this is Microsoft?

Very nice concept, making use of the 3D video to help out your interface. I seem to recall another article posted here a few months ago that showed Longhorn giving a 3D view of your open application windows in a way that's similar to this. It looks like they've got a great interface idea and are doing a good job of thinking about where it can be useful. I can see this being a very slick approach to organization of photos, but I really wish they'd make it so that the keywords could be hierarchical. It didn't look in the demo like they did.

Wow...very nice. I love my Adobe Album, but like everyone, hat tagging. My only question:
WHEN?

When will this be released?

To me, this looks like Microsoft just went and updated the interface to the Digital Image Library software. It's part of the Digital Image Library 9 "suite" and I currently use it to organize my photos. Much of the functionality sounds the same, the major difference is the interface.

I know I am going to have to pay extra for the better interface; it's the Microsoft way of doing things. And may God have mercy on my soul, I get suckered into it every time!

I'm impressed. I had thought that the '3D view' touted for Longhorn was a gimmick, but this actually looks usefully. Very nice. Something to look forward to. :P

June 30th...wow, no wonder it took me a few minutes to find this thread. lol...anyway, on to my real point - Channel 9 (http://channel9.msdn.com) has posted (http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=14275) a ~9 minute live-demo video (mms://wm.microsoft.com/ms/msnse/0407/23062/MSR/Channel9_Videos_DemoOfMediaBrowser_MBR_300k_110k_56k.wmv) about this software. Very very cool. :D
