"Laptop users will always suffer from one design constraint compared to their desktop counterparts - quality surround sound output. If you frequently play games or watch DVD-Movies on your laptop, you may want to take at look at an external audio solution like Trust's new 510EX USB 5.1 Sound Expert External (116x98x24mm). Similar in concept to Creative's Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX, Trust's 510EX is a 5.1 sound system that connects to either a desktop PC or a laptop via a USB 1.1 connection (no external power supply needed), and then also to some speakers. As well as receiving sound via 6 speakers (5.1 sound), there is also an option for virtual 7.1 sound, where the sound appears to come from 8 speakers, according to Trust. However, unlike Creative's more expensive offering, the 510EX doesn't provide native 7.1 surround sound, doesn't support DVD-Audio and only records up to 48KHz (opposed to 96kHz), so it won't appeal to those looking add the latest audio support in a portable solution."

With so many more laptops becoming desktop replacements, many people are looking for ways to interface their laptops with their stereo systems. Because of the USB interface, no seperate cards are needed to get 5.1 sound out of your laptop and enjoy DVDs and the such. :)
