View Full Version : Music Stores Everywhere...

Everyone is seems to be following in Apple's footsteps with music. I've learned about two new online music efforts in the past day - first up, we have the McDonalds music campaign. It seems that if you buy a Big Mac meal, you'll get a free song from Sony's Connect store. And as an added bonus, you'll get 22.9 grams of fat! 8O

I think this will have an even lower success rate than the Pepsi/iTunes promotion did - are people really going to want to download a new software application just to get a free 99 cent song? Sony would be miles ahead if they had an integrated approach with Windows Media Player or another popular audio jukebox.

Next up, Canadians have a new option for music: electronics giant Future Shop (now owned by Best Buy) is launching a music service dubbed Bonfire. It's not live yet, but their slogan is "Bonfire: Where Music Burns". I think the name is somewhat cheesy, but it's unique and Canadian-sounding. I'm guessing they'll be partnering with Puretracks just like Telus did. This is the beginning of a trend where, for the next couple of years, we'll see co-branded music stores popping up all over. Eventually most will fail because people are more likely to go to the source than to a co-branded site.

Mmmmm, how do I download the fat?

Mmmmm, how do I download the fat?

1. Order Big Mac
2. Open mouth
3. Insert Big Mac
4. Chew
5. Swallow

If you're in a rush, you can skip step #4 like most people. ;-)

Yeah when I saw the commercial on TV I thought it was the dumbest thing. Who even eats at McDonalds? There is no way I am going to eat a nasty BigMac just to get a song from Sony.

Who even eats at McDonalds?

Um, millions upon millions of people all over the world?

Or people who enjoy proprietary Sony technology?

Seriously though, I read a few years ago that their small* milkshakes were actually good for you in some sense. I can't remember if it was low-cal, low-sugar or what but it was well before the whole low-carb stink.

* same small as now

OK who accualy enjoys it. I'm just not a very big McDonald's fan, never have really. I'll have to dig up a picture of the McDonalds in Fairbanks. There is a man who had a McDonald's built next to his house and in protest he has Ronald McDonald hanging in the trees.

This still doesn't beat Finnish hamburger-chain Hesburger (http://www.hesburger.fi)'s own GSM subscription idea. Talk more, earn bonus to buy more food... yummy! (Btw, I like their salads more than fatty fries... ;) ) Plus the coverage is excellent: virtually all of Finland is covered! :D

Did you guys hear about this dude who went on an all-McDonald's diet for 30 days to see what kind of side effects it would have on his body. Before you guys say that that was the dumbest thing, he admits to it himself, however, he did not realize how incredibly bad it would be. He finally wrote his article (in the New York Times, I think) about how he went from being this young healthy guy to someone that was overweight with severe kidney and/or liver problems. I cannot remember the details but basically his body was all kinds of messed up. Anyways, yeah, I can't understand who would eat McDonald's, and I know that there are people that do.

I think you're talking about Morgan Spurlock:
