It covers a 12X focal length range, from medium wide angle to telephoto. The lens which is finished in Canon's off-white coloured metal and has rubberized zoom and focus controls. It comes complete with a removable tripod collar, lens shade and carrying case. The closest focusing distance is a very reasonable .7 meters at all focal lengths, and it takes 77mm filters.<br /><br />There are four mechanical switches on the left side of the lens for focus range limiting, AF/MF, Stabilization On and Off, and Stabilization Mode. The rear lens mount features a rubber gasket for weather sealing (as do most Canon high-end lenses over the past couple of years)."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/28-70.jpg" /><br /><br />"Because of advances in computer-assisted lens design and also the use of exotic glass elements, zooms lenses have become very good indeed. The best ones are almost as good as the best primes, and much more versatile. But they are relatively slow. In fact few if any manufacturers are even producing new prime lens designs anymore, and some are even being discontinued due to slow sales."<br /><br />It looks like this is designed to be a lens for DSLRs and has a fantastic 12x zoom. With it being capable of wide angle as well as telephoto, 12X zoom covering full-frame 35mm, this lens may be worthwhile for many photographers, even though it doesn't produce the best quality images in all cases. Read the review to find out a lot more.

:way to go: Nice, very nice. Obviously best paired up with a Canon SLR with a 1:1 magnification ratio though......

I still think it's a rather pointless lens.

I still think it's a rather pointless lens.

Why? 28-300 ISM looks pretty decent to me.

One big compromise of a lens. Big, heavy, but it isn't fast, and the quality is probably going to be behind the rest of the Ls. So what we get is a 28-300 lens, which translates to 44.8-480 on the 10D and 300D, so you lose the original convenience of having a moderate wide angle to telephoto lens. Given it's cost, there are better ways of covering normal to telephoto FOVs and perspectives.

Michael @ luminous landscape used this lens on assignment and didn't really have the greatest things to say about it. I want the new 70-300 DO IS!

Heh, 70-300 DO IS. Now that's another lens full of trade-offs. It's not lighter than the 75-300 IS USM, and the price you pay gets you a 70-200/4 L with a 1.4x TC, with change left over. Or top up a $100 and get the 300/4 L IS with 1.4x TC.

Sure, they're all bigger, and the 70-200/1.4x TC combination is about 200g heavier, and the 300/1.4x TC combination is double, but the price you pay just for size is just not worth it. And the L lenses will defintely have far far better image quality.

I'm gonna slap myself for what I just said. :silly: Lenses in general are full of trade-offs. Just that these lenses to me make the wrong ones.
