I would like some feedback on the Dell MP3 player. Of those who have it, what do you think?

Can it be used as an external hard drive? If so, how? Since I heard that it requires Music Match software to transfer files, how would you transfer any other data?

You should be able to do this out of the box. Make sure you have all the software installed that came with the unit. If not, you can download here (http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&Category=0&OS=WW1&OSL=EN&SvcTag=&SysID=DJ_DIGITAL_MP&DeviceID=6358&Type=&ReleaseID=R74224). You don't use MusicMatch do do this, but windows explorer.

Also, you can look into something like Dudebox Explorer (http://www.delldjsite.com/reviews/index.php?qid=201).

I have not purchased one yet, but I had read that you needed Music Match. If it is correct that you can transfer files with Windows Explorer then I will seriously consider purchasing one.

You can treat it just like a portable hard drive, though you'll need to install the driver on every computer you wish to use the DJ on.

Really? It doesn't just mount as a removable mass storage device? That's lame...you should be able to connect it to any USB port and have it work like a removable flash drive.

Yea, that is why I wouldn't buy one.

Which hard drive based MP3 players can be used that way? Can the Ipod?

Only Iriver can be used as an external hard drive?

I know the archos can also, but the one I had was pretty low quality.

I've had the DJ for about 36 hours and I love it. With the right headphones, the sound quality is more than acceptable to my ears. I also stumbled upon a Belkin wireless FM transmitter (the TuneCast II) for $33 last night and used that today to listen to my music during the morning commute on an unused FM station.

If you are talking about transferring data files, then the Dell Explorer software can be used. You can also use Dudebox (which has a nice web interface as well as a traditional GUI).

If you are talking about transferring audio files, I'm just using Windows Media Player to move my VBR WMA files from my hard drive to the Dell DJ. I removed Music Match right after the install.
