We've been using the earlier model iRiver recorders to record Bible classes at my church and the recording quality is really quite good for having such a small mic. I'd highly recommend these for recording purposes.

Is the battery life truly on the order of 40 hours per AA?

I'm not sure, I'll have to ask the guy who's been in charge of them. I'll let you know what I find out.
