Capture software

Does anyone know of any free capture software that captures in a compressed format? I have VideoWave III which captures in straight avi but the files are pretty large. MM2 won't work for me because I am using my miniDV camera to convert my old 8mm videos and MM2 as problems with that setup.

I could stick with the straight aci and convert it to wma, but I'd like to skip this step.

Thank you. I hadn't realized that I could use that to capture my video, even though it tells you right at the start that it does! MS certainly does give out some nice stuff free.

I tried and it does exactly what I want. Now I just need more memory and HD space.
