http://www.apple.com/emac/

Apple has just introduced an updated eMac offering a faster processor, Superdrive, and more spacious hard drive for $999.

Apple will also continue to sell the earlier model for $799 (sans Superdrive). This makes the eMac a perfect choice for those curious about the Mac platform, but don't wish to spend too much money. The perfect low-cost Digital Media Workstation for all you digital media junkies!

Of course, if you're not interested in Mac desktops, check out the iBook line instead.

[UPDATE] Forgot to mention academic pricing on the low-end model is now $599.

That's a pretty good deal on a Mac. Around the same price as some PCs, you get to experience an Apple. The eMac is not a dog computer either, it's just not as "sexy" as the newest iMacs or any of the portables that Apple offers. The original eMac was geared toward the education system but the current ones are pretty nice. :)

$599? The EDU sites I 've seen show $750?

As other Mac sites have pointed out, the eMac is now as faster than the 12" PB and as fast as the iMacs and the 15" PBs. This means two things 1) eMac is an excellent value and 2) a possible iMac and PB update soon.

I am tempted to pick up one to replace my G3 iBook but refuse to buy anything with the crappy Motorola G4.

HOW can you replace an iBook with a desktop? 8O

I can't imagine sitting here in my IKEA Poang chair (http://www.ikea-usa.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=12&langId=-1&catalogId=10101&productId=11055) with an eMac on my lap!

I think it is B and this price makes the eMac a great box for managing your audio and video. hmmm Wonder how Final Cut Pro performs on them. It would be nice to have a ultraportable windows for productivity and an eMac for media

Why can't a PC do media?

Because macs make it VERY easy.

I have to give it to them: nothing works like their iLife apps...its like using one app for everything so you dont have to think about putting it all together.

I am finding the cheapest iBook to be $949 on the edu sites, but the stats on it are so crap for that price. :( I wish they lowered the price on the iBook some more.

Why do you say crappy G4? Is this only in comparison to the rockin' G5?

Yes and no. Not saying whether one is superior than the other, I think most people will agree that the IBM G5 compares very favorably to the current Intel and AMD products out there despite its slower clock speed.

G3, when it came out, also compared very favorably with the P3 of its days.

Between 1999 to 2003, Motorola roughly increased the speed of G4 by 3x from 0.45 GHz to 1.42 GHz. In the same period, Intel increased its speed by 5x from 0.6 GHz to 3.04 GHz. One can argue how the G4 is more efficient but there's no way it can make up the 50% difference in clock speed.

HOW can you replace an iBook with a desktop?
Well, I was exaggerating a little but imagine this, for the price of one 15.2" PB with SuperDrive, I can get one eMac with SuperDrive and two additional eMacs to put wherever I like! Sure, that is still not as portable as one laptop, but it does illustrate the excellent value of eMac.

Yes, but consider that is the cheapest way to experience OS X on a portable and consider how often one has to harness 100% of modern CPUs, the iBook is a good deal at $949 IMHO. One also cannot find a better designed laptop in that price range either.

Well well... iBook and PowerBook are two different things indeed!
