The company, based in Mountain View, Calif., on Wednesday will launch a test with about 1,000 invited guests to try out a new e-mail service called "Gmail." Google, which made its name in search but has added numerous services, such as a news aggregation page and a newsgroup interface, says that Gmail is search-based e-mail."<br /><br />The New York Times Technology section also <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/31/technology/31CND-GOOGLE.html?ex=1396155600&en=85d4be9cfceb5e15&ei=5007&partner=USERLAND">has an article</a>. It has just got to be great to be Google 8). It still won't be able to support my 3.5GB of email, but 1GB is a lot of storage space for most users, given that Hotmail offers only 2MB. In any case, they must be planning some massive storage space if they plan to make this a reality. Although, given how cheap disks are these days, I don't doubt this will happen in the near future. I wonder how they plan to back this beast up?!? :?

Sounds good, but as someone on neowin was speculating, I hope this isn't an April Fool's Day joke. Just think how much space they may have to supply. Say 1 million people sign up. Granted most will only use a few megabytes, that's still a ton of space. Well, I'll believe it when I see it. GL Google. :)

Yeah, it is looking more and more like a gag. There is tons of speculation on Slashdot. Although, if it is a joke, then one amazing one because there are some VERY reliable sites (CNN, Slashdot, CNET, New York Times, Reuters, AP, etc. etc.) that have this article :).

I am inclined to believe that it's a joke as well. I mean, what the heck is...

...search-based e-mail?

I suppose one gets up each morning and says to themselves, "I wonder if anyone has decided to leave me an email message randomly placed somewhere on the internet. It sure is a good thing I have Gmail!!"

No way this is real...I would be stunned.

Did I read somewhere that a GMail computer would scan your email to gather aggregate information which, I assume, Google would then sell. It's an interesting way to offset the cost (and be able to offer 1GB I suppose), but I'm not sure I'm too keen on that.
