I'm in the market for a waterproof digital camera. The best I've been able to find is the U60 from Sony (thanks for the great review, btw!). Has anyone else had a good/bad experience with a waterproof digital camera?

There's this Pentax, forgot the model number. Also there are cameras with accessory underwater covers.

I've got a Canon S45 which is a nice little camera and you can buy an underwater housing for it as well.

As with most housings, all the buttons are mapped like little Rube Goldberg machines with springs and levers to the outer casing so you can do anything you could do with the cover off.

It's really handy if you want to bring your camera on a boat or to the beach and don't want to worry about getting water or sand in it. I like the casing concept because you don't need two different cameras for underwater and out of water

As far as the Canon casing I think it fits the S35,S40,S45,S50 so you could pick up one of the older ones (S35,S40) used if the newer ones cost too much. The water proof case is a little pricy at $175 although for SLR users I think they make housings that cost about $1500+ so that's a pretty good deal :?

so in general, what is the best way to protect a camera from water, like to the extent of heavy-extreme rain/full submersion?
thats how i lost mine, and now have yet to really consider a new one till i am sure i can easily protect it!

Where did you get the waterproof housing? Was it directly from Canon or a 3rd party manufacturer/vendor?

It is made by Canon - model WP-DC300

looks like the price has come down a little depending on where you buy it... I highly recommend this combo - worked great for me

for submersion it's a camera like the U60 or a camera with the underwater case.

For rain it's either you get a camera like the square Pentaxes, or you invest in a camera bag that has the covers that protect against weather. Of course you can't shoot while it's raining.
