As the topic states....
Personally I like big dj-style headphones and in-ears IF they are good.

What about earbuds? :) Or is that what you refer to as earphones?

I like earphones a lot... They're small, roll up into a tight bundle, and take up zero space wherever you go. Sure, their sound quality is only a fraction of the bigger headphones, but I don't mind as I don't really expect quality when I'm away from my home.
I've been wanting to try those in-ear headphones for a while now.. what are they like? Some people really like them, and others really hate how they hear themselves "breathing."

I own a pair of Sony MDR EX-71SL in-ear headphones. Sure you can hear sounds (breathing, wire rubbing against clothing, footspteps) transmitted through the wires, but only when there's nothing playing or the music is too soft. Otherwise it does an almost too good a job of isolating you from your environment. (I missed around 10 calls on my cellphone the first few days of listening).
Some people aren't too comfortable with the idea of putting somthing inside their ear canals. But apart some periodic mild itching :P I find they work better in staying "plugged" in, better than "The Plug" from Koss.
I was used to the quality of Koss PortaPro and The Plug. The Sonys are definitely better than those two. I'm going to stick with them for a year maybe (yeah right...) before I upgrade to Shures or Etymotics.

I picked up a pair of Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia in-ear buds (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000095SB6/ref=pd_sbs_e_1/102-7793830-3983327?v=glance&s=electronics) a month or two ago - they're very nice! The bass is much more obvious, and the sounds much cleaner than in my old Sony earbuds. They also do a great job of blocking out ambient sound.
Unfortunately, I've learned that my right ear canal is larger than my left ear canal, and none of the 2 additional "caps" fit very well. A quick poke (being careful not to harm my tender brain) every few minutes does the trick.

I've got the same ones and love them. I remember when I heard about them on PPCT and someone said something along the lines of "I listen to familiar songs and hear new things with these things." I thought it was a neat quote, but was impressed to find the same thing when mine arrived. The sound on these things is great. I use them daily on the bus and every few weeks on the plane. In either case, the sound is outstanding.
Highly recommended.

Interestingly, I just picked up a pair of the EX51LP this morning and I am liking them a lot. They fit very comfortably in my ear, though it is a bit weird to have in ear phones. Sound quality is good, and bass is excellent. In the amazon reviews, a lot of people complain about the fact that the volume sounds too low on these phones but I don't experience that at all. I recommend it.

My guess is that those people probably aren't using the phones correctly - they most likely don't have them shoved in far enough to seal properly or point the drivers into the canal.
It IS a little weird if you haven't used them before. My wife won't touch them - she doesn't even like normal earbuds, so these totally creep her out.

Yes, much like in a Shakesperian play the lead chararter has a single flaw that is his undoing.
