My wife uses a Nikon Coolpix 4300 and loves it (I actually like it too), but it has horrible red eye and without a shoe, there isn't anything I can do to help her out (other than Photoshop every image where the flash goes off).

I'm looking to replace it with another camera when we get our tax refund back, but I just can't figure out what might work best. While she is very familiar with the Nikon GUI, I don't have to limit my search to Nikon. Any ideas?

How about a Nikon 5400? Or a Canon G3? What's the budget anyway?

I'd say $300-$500. I'm really most concerned about red eye, but the other fact is she isn't a photographer and doesn't need any features other than an autofocus. I'd like the 5400, but its just too expensive for her.

Doesn't have to be a Nikon, and since there isn't a model between the 4300 and 5400, I'm guessing its not going to be. That gab between the two cameras needs to be plugged IMO. The 5400 is a great camera, but its almost twice what a 4300 costs.

There is the Nikon 4500.. Actually redeye is a rather tricky thing, since I rarely encounter it (so far), so I can't say what camera will or will not give red eye. Does the red-eye reduction feature on the 4300 help? Or is it not enough?

Its just not enough. My son's eyes always turn read. My D100 doesn't cause red eye as bad as the 4300 and I'm convinced its because of the distance between the flash and the lense.

Isn't the 4500 depreciated?

Well, I can still find it over here. Should be within your budget. Other cameras I can think of would be those mega zoom cameras, since they tend to use pop up flashes. As always, try before you buy.

That's a good idea about the Mega zoom cameras. I might have to try one.

Thanks!
