The company's VC-9 Video decoding technology has won acceptance by a standards body working to create the next generation DVD format, the successor to MPEG 2. However, the approval is only provisional. And further details must be worked about before the DVD Forum can approve a final format. But this move certainly gives Microsoft a solid foot in the door.

Very interesting. I have been seeing a lot of papers being published by the folks at Microsoft Research over the last few years in this field and always wondered why. Good stuff...

It has been interesting to see MSFT making a slow transition from the office to the living room. Hope Bill succeeds!
