Although quite the newbie to photography, I'm planning on getting a very nice digital camera to get me going. I've heard some great things about the Canon G2 and G3 - anyone have an opinion on which one is better? Is there a better source than eBay for equipment?

Thanks!

While those were nice cameras, you're a wee bit out of date. The G5 is the current model. Best to take a look around here:

If you're not going to go DSLR, that Pro1 sure looks nice to me...

should i take my bmw in 3 lites or 4.5???

the G3 is a more advanced camera and some say among the best out there (even getter than a G5 that some say suffers from mild CA)

G3 all the way...

Jason, the Pro1 is nice but 1) its not out yet and 2) its $1000 which is WAY more than the g-series

There is also the S500.

Two other non-Canon cameras you may want to consider are the Sony DSC-V1 and the Nikon Coolpix 5400. They are in the same price range with a very similar feature-set.

Regarding where to buy things, check out http://shopping.yahoo.com or http://www.bensbargains.net or http://www.shopping.com - All three site do comparison based shopping, i.e. will give you prices from many different sites and you can pick the cheapest. I have recently bought things from http://www.ecost.com and they are quite good.

Gary,
I think everyone probably already knows of dpreview.com ;-). But the goal would be, once the site is launched, for people to be able to get access to as good (if not better) reviews of cameras here on DMT.

I gotta get workin' here.

And yes, once we lauch, we will be unstopable!!!

I personally prefer the G3 due to better controls and egronomics. Beyond that the two are pretty similar.

Thanks for the links and ideas everyone! Please keep in mind that I'm going off to college this fall, so money is the big issue. I'd like to spend only about $400 to get going - no doubt I'll spend more as I become addicted. :)

Digital media is like a black hole: tripods, mem cards, filters, software, new HD for photos, new PC to handle the newest pshop version....it ever ends

No, entirely untrue. It is only as expensive as you want it to be. The problem here is that buying fever sweeps a lot of people. I want to do this, I need to buy this. I want to do that, I need to buy that. Well, having a good bit of experience, I can tell you 90% of the time the purchases are simply not needed. A bit of patience, skill, and care can go a long way!

Rebel....Rebel....(who tore your dress?)

Do you mean the Digital Rebel, i.e. the 300D? Eh, go for the 10D instead :) (yeah, yeah, I know it is twice as expensive)

Twice? I thought the difference was smaller than that.

It is almost double AFAICT. 300D for about $700 or $750. The 10D available for $1400 (though now probably available for a little less).

I think it is safe to say that canon is about to roll out a 10d and rebel replacement to really stick it to Nikon and their D70. This is very good since it will make the rebel and 10d (which is an AMAZING camera) fall in price

100% speculation

But it is BASED on the fact that this market is very competitive since sonsumers tend to jump at the latest/greates new "toy" available.

Can I get a AMEN! Buying fever + ignorance about a subject = getting taken for a lot of money.

A little bit of research and learning goes a long way before buying a product, especially when related to digital media. When I bought my S40, I looked at what I need from a camera, how I would use it, compared reviews with other comparable and more expensive cameras and determined that no, I did not need to spend $1000+ in a camera plus accessories to do what I need to do with it.

Buying fever is the main problem with American Consumerism that is getting the country and its citizens into debt while overinflating the GDP.

The thing with digital cameras though, it is easy to blame it on the technology. With film...it can never be the fault of the roll....but the "noise" or "small" sensor can always be blamed for any bad shots

Lee Yuan Sheng

Oh, no, film is the same.

"Kodak sucks, blah blah grainy, blah blah"

And since the imager is only part of the equation, there're plenty of things to blame.

"My lens isn't good enough, I must have the best and greatest"
"I need <insert name of stupidly expensive specialised gadget> this for this shoot (and said shooter only uses it once or twice, compared to a pro who recovers the cost of the equipment in one or two shoots)."

And many more things, but I don't want to claw back into the depths of my mind and recover the various excuses I've seen; they're brain damaging, I'd say.

Dude, this is an extremely general statement, what are you basing this results on?

I agree with yslee here, there are times when the film sucks too.
