Yes, only a Zune enthusiast site would care about such things, but hey, we are what we are. I had downloaded the v1 Zune software yesterday before the new stuff came out, just in case I ever needed to use it again. Note the nice Zune icon, and the file version of 1.3. The file size is a relatively svelte 5.31 MB.

The new Zune software, on the other hand, is a bit of a mystery. It has a nasty looking generic Windows icon, is version 6.1 (where did we lose five versions?), and is a hefty 33.7 MB in size.

Kind of curious, no? The mysteries never end with this whole Zune thing!

I think the main difference is that the Zune1 installer was basically just a download manager. Its main purpose was to pull the download files from the Zune server, which I believe lead to a lot of the install hangups. It was kind of pointless to include a CD in the Zune30 packages, because it could only install on an internet-connected PC.
Last Christmas, I had a friend who just received a Zune for Christmas call me up because she couldn't install the software. She had two computers, an XP and an ME, but only the ME machine was on the internet, and Zune didn't support ME.
I believe the Zune team made the right decision to not include a CD in the gen2 packaging, thus making the installer actually useful. It now only downloads updates, not everything needed for the install.
