A newsletter sent out to subscribers just moments ago confirms this as update day for both the Zune software and Zune hardware. In theory, Microsoft Update will dutifully handle the update process; if not, there'll always be Zune.net for the good ol' manual download and install.

You joined the social last year. I don't think we'll see this anytime soon.
Microsoft will probably want to minimise the number of bricked Zunes from failed update attempts due to insufficient battery power, so they'll probably make USB-based updating a requirement.

This newsletter indicates that all the new features on the Zune 2 will be available for the current Zune 30 owners. I had seen a rumor somewhere on the internet recently that the Zune 30 firmware update would not be able to natively play mp4/m4v videos even though the new 80 can. Has anyone heard anything concrete on this?

Correct - due to hardware limitations, the 30GB Zune will not support MPEG-4/h.264 natively. You'll find confirmation here (http://www.zunethoughts.com/news/show/23190/zune-mvp-conference-call-notes-video-photo.html).
