As most people know, I am one of the most impatient human beings on the face of the planet... well, at least when it comes to new toys I am. If you are like me and have been looking to get your hands on the Windows Mobile 6 operating system before all of those fancy new handsets are released, now is your chance! :D

Download: Microsoft Device Emulator 2.0 | Windows Mobile 6 Software Development Kits

Any idea how to get a standalone version of the WM6 bits up and running for those of us who don't have Visual Studio 2005?

If you do not have Visual Studio you will have to wait for Microsoft to release a Standalone emulator and WM6 images as they did for Windows Mobile 5.0. I didn't realize this as I have VS2005 on my work computer where I installed the emulator... which destroys all the hope I had for playing with this at home ;)

The Microsoft link starts off with a header reading "Microsoft Device Emulator 2.0 -- Standalone Release". I think we have the base of what we need (you can at least enjoy the improved speed and other features). Now we need the WM6 images, skins, and so forth...

I believe one of our readers had mentioned that manually editing the SDK MSI using MSI editing tools, he was able to get the SDK to install without installing VS.

For most users, myself included, that is a bit complicated. Will have to wait for Microsoft.

I have a different issue. I do not see the icon for the emulator in the Start Menu post install. And if I go into Program Files folder, I do not see the emulator installed there either. BTW I have the 1.0 of the emulator installed. I will try uninstalling it first. :?

This emulator installs in the same directory as 1.0 (weird, i know!). if you still have the shortcut for 1.0, you're golden!

So I was not hallucinating. I wanted to mention that I thought I saw files updated in the 1.0 folder.

Another question: What is the version in the Emulator's About box? Mine says 8.0.60801.00. :?

same version number as mine. also, for those that are looking for an msi editor there is a free one called Less MSIerables (http://blogs.pingpoet.com/overflow/archive/2005/06/02/2449.aspx) though i have no idea how to use it ;)

Any word if this will work with Visual Studio 2005 Express?
