Motorola makes a move to prevent being left behind in the exploding QWERTY market for Windows Mobile Smartphones. They have announced the GSM Q, which we knew about for a long time now, and the Q9 – a smaller, tighter packed version of the Q. The Q9 sports HSDPA, a USB2 connection and 256MB of onboard memory! Finally you’ll be able to transfer music to your phone quickly and easily. The Q GSM is pretty much a clone of the CDMA version from what I can tell. I’ll update this shortly with more info and press release links. <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Temporale-20070212-MotoQ9-Large.jpg"><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Temporale-20070212-MotoQ9.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/></a> <b>Update:</b> You can read all the details in Motorola's <a href="http://www.motorola.com/mediacenter/news/detail.jsp?globalObjectId=7722_7651_23">press release</a><b>Update 2:</b> Sorry - it looks like I got the name wrong. It's actually called <b>Q q9</b> and not just Q9 as I had stated. Me thinks someone needs to talk with Moto about cool names and version numbers. <!> <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Temporale-20070212-MotoQgsm-Large.jpg"><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Temporale-20070212-MotoQgsm.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/></a>

I like the changes to the keyboard on the GSM version. This could be a very compelling device. Maybe I jumped down Motorola's throat too soon!

Finally...

I've been dreaming about the GSM Q for many years. Instead, I have to settle for a Samsung i320N.

Hope the battery won't be as bad as the i320N.

Tough call. The original Q eats batteries faster than the i320. Hopefully they've improved power consumption.

Very Nice,

What would be very nice would be to get the keyboard from the Q9 in the case of the QGSM (along with HSDPA of course). I think the BlackJack and I are going to have to have that talk :( in the near future.
Does this mean it will come to Cing... after all the marketing investment they made with the BlackJack that doesn't really seem possible in Q2

I think it will come to Cingular and I think it will wipe out any chance of a BlackJack upgrade.

I would like to see the Q9 in person; seems like it has a lot of shiny surface. One thing I noticed about the SCPL Moto phones is that it is slippery (so is the silver Q) and prone to accidents.

I am becoming a fan of the rubberized body.

The thing I like about the Q9 - the memory and the keyboard buttons (square instead of the ridiculous oval ones).

The Q9 is slated for Q2, read it as June end and Q GSM is slated for the second half, read it as October or November. :?

So is the "MOTO Q q9" (the top picture in the original post) a CDMA or GSM device? I'm confused now...

It is a GSM device. Since HSDPA is a 3G GSM technology.
