By improving usability and adding support for Microsoft® Office features previously available only on PCs, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 delivers to the small screen a familiar and rich experience that meets the needs of work and life while on the go, all with a single device. “A work force that is both mobile and connected is becoming essential for business success,” said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. “That’s why we’re integrating innovative mobile technologies into all our key products, with Windows Mobile as the centerpiece.” Windows Mobile 6 delivers the ability to view e-mails in their original rich HTML format with live links to Web and SharePoint® sites, which means text and images are displayed as they would be on a PC, and are available from a corporate e-mail server such as Exchange Server 2007, from Web-based accounts such as Windows Live™ Hotmail or from a myriad of other popular service providers. Windows Mobile 6 also includes Windows Live for Windows Mobile, which provides customers with a rich set of Windows Live services. For example, now through Windows Live Messenger, people can chat with more than one person at one time, express themselves through animated figures, quickly send a file or image, or record and send voice notes."</i><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-2007feb-wm6release.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><br />Even though Windows Mobile 6 was <i>sort of</i> announced officially last week, it is now <i>really official.</i> Microsoft has released the mandatory press release to make things official and here is the best part - <i>"And in the United States, the popular T-Mobile Dash will be updated with Windows Mobile 6 and be available in the coming months. Current T-Mobile Dash owners will also be able to upgrade existing devices with Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6."</i> It's party time for the Dash users. Read about the press release over <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/feb07/02-11WM6SoftwarePR.mspx">here</a> and check out the new Windows Mobile 6 Web site over <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/6/default.mspx">here.</a>

You know what though, I'm ready for the next BIG thing. This is just another face lift with some extra bells and whistles. Of course it does give me an excuse to buy something new when it comes out.

Same here, but I think it will buy me some time.

Also this news is just great for current Dash owners who are happy with their phone and are not planning an upgrade in the near future. Great way to continue the 2 year contract.

WOOHOO!!!! Just bought a S620 knowing it would be upgraded in the next few months! This is great, let's hope it rolls out around the other handhelds and the next upgrade we need to by a new device for is WM7!

YeeeHaaaw! I finally picked a phone that's gonna get an upgrade. They really need to make the upgrade available to Q and Blackjack owners as well. Two questions: does anyone know the cost? Is WM6 compatible with WinXP?

I hope the BlackJack gets the upgrade - I find it a better device than my Dash.

As for the upgrade just being a small thing, well... I think it's worth it. You'll have to wait for some of my more indepth articles later this week. But there's a lot of good to love in WinMo6.

It is very good to hear some models being provided the WM6 upgrade in the near future.

Does anyone, with a knowledge of Cingular history, want to provide any speculation as to the availability of an upgrade for their current WM5 devices such as the Cingular 3125?

The ability to receive updates DIRECTLY from Microsoft has me VERY interested in this new version for my 3125.

Thanks for sharing info....

This is nothing new. Well, unless Microsoft actually uses it this time around. I think it was called "download agent" or something like that before. It's been in the OS for a while, but Microsoft can't seem to get the carriers to allow them to send down updates without the carrier spending 3 months testing the update first. :?

Any ideas on whether the newly announced Q GSM will have WinMo6. There don't seem to be many pictures of it yet. I think if Cing doesn't give the upgrade for the BlackJack I might jump ship and get the Q. It would be nice to use a good set of headphones and real mini usb again.

That news should be up on the front page inside of the next hour or so. ;)

you and me both. though i doubt if there is not an update it will not be the fault of cingular, but instead samsung. cingular has made a huge amount of money off of the Blackjack and after talking to a few friends of mine at Cingular Corp, several people are worried that they will lose customers to other carriers if an update doesn't come out. :(

For folks who are waiting for the Dash upgrade. I just finished watching Microsoft's 3GSM keynote recording. The Dash customers will get the upgrade directly from the T-Mobile Web site in the 2Q and it will be FREE. WooHoo!

Any word about the HTC Startrek as sold by Cingular as the Cingular 3125?

Thanks for the feedback....

Sorry nothing was mentioned about the other models. Let's hope that T-Mobile generosity will force the other carriers to provide updates for their popular models.

There was no released beta ROMs. There was leaked betas and cooked ROMs, but nothing was ever released. ;)
