If anyone can figure out the swing control, please post your instructions.

Based on the instructions that come with, I press and hold the control (down or action button) to get the amount of power, release, then press again to hit. Am I getting this wrong?

Yeah, release and I press the center select key on th D-Pad - on the S620. Works fine.
