I don't think Verizon or Motorola have provided the details on the updates to the Q. The word on the street is that this new Q carries an updated software that not only fixes some problems but also improves battery life. :) Also, the new unit ships with a carrying case instead of a holster. So who has ordered one?

It does look better in black.

in the picture, the screen appears to be centered; moreso than the silver Q. if this is an accurate picture, i like the centered look. i also like the Black color...i'm going to swap my silver case with a black one so i can have a new-old phone... :o

Right - it looks positively "Blackjackesque" doesn't.

Very. Just like Moto. Rather than innovate and make something better. They change the color.

Makes me wonder if BlackBerry will sue Moto for using the word Black in the name.

Maybe Samsung can sue Moto for making it black.

I wonder about the software update as well: I downloaded it last night and attempted to install it on my Q, but the installer informed me that version was already on my Q... I'm wondering if only the installer was updated.
I do like the black case tho, although not $250 worth.

Maybe T-Mobile/HTC will sue Moto/Samsung for making a Smartphone with a keyboard that also uses the color black on the case.

I wonder about the software update as well:
I don't think the software update has been released yet. If I were Verizon, I will release it only in January. This way you can sway those sitting on the fences for an update, force them to buy a new unit.

Just trying to remind our readers that we are talking about Verizon over here - the company that loves working for us. And Moto on Verizon can only spell even more trouble.

Faith in Verizon. You got to be kidding me. :)
Nice link. Someone had mentioned about it but I had heard it. It is a pretty good comedy routine. This whole episode could have been on the Seinfeld.

Motorola made the software update (such as it is) for Verizon Qs available for download on their official support site on 12/12... it is differentiated from their earlier software updates by the versioning number in the filename: Motorola_Software_Update_Stand_Alone-01-05-06.exe

Wow! I am speechless. Looks like Verizon is in a holiday mood. I have to admit, this time they are really working for us.

I'm convinced Moto just can't stand doing things right for very long. How is the average user supposed to figure out if they should even try this or if they need it?

The weird thing is that there is no announcement and the web page does not provide any date/version information. I agree Jerry, how is the user supposed to know that there is something new to update.

Would be nice if they sent us a press release. ;) We've got the "Submit News" page all setup just for this reason. :D

All I can see is while HTC and Samsung are busy cranking out new devices at an amazing pace, Moto will be busy dipping their once decent and aging Smartphone into different colors. What happened Moto? Did the possibility of success make you tired? Do you ache for the MPx220 days?

I learned about Motorola's peculiarities with my original analog flip-phone years ago: when I'm using one of their products I check their web pages for changes every week.
A month ago I sent Moto an email asking how to tell the revision of their then posted software. To their credit, they answered promptly with the version of the available package, for me to compare with my Q, and this time around they added a version number to the filename...
I think they just need to hire a senior director for the advancement of corporate common sense ;)

I like the idea and the title for the guy they hire - "Senior Director for Common Sense"

I still stunned at the fact that Motorola released the updated software along with the Black Q. Moto and Verizon didn't greedy. That is so unlike Verizon and Moto. :? It has to be the holiday effect.

just an FYI: apparently the latest update (MOL2) breaks some 3rd party applications that functioned under the earlier release (MOL1). People at qusers.com have started compiling a list of broken applications.

hmm still no GSM version? I've lost the lust for the Q... even releasing it in black seems to have failed! 8O

Tor original schedule, was to have the GSM version available for carriers to test at the end of 2006. So you won't see the GSM version for another couple months easy.

I think there have been too many cool phones that have come out since the Q was released. Even though Moto had a hit on its hands, all they could come up with as a follow up was to color it. Who still wants a GSM Q with the BlackJack and the Dash, to name a couple, out there?

Agreed Jerry, the Excalibur is very tempting [we don't have the BlackJack here yet so I haven't played with that one yet], it's just disappointing that moto can't do better.

It is really sad. The Q was a great start. I guess they got tired.
