Tonight, I'm heading off to Microsoft's Mobius conference (http://www.mobiussite.com)...only this time, instead of going to Seattle, I'm headed to Thailand. 8O It's still a bit surprising because it's such a departure from the norm, but Microsoft had opted to do two Mobius events this year, one in Boston, and one in the Phuket area of Thailand. I'm in for 39 hours of travel, so having some portable entertainment is in order. Thankfully, my lovely wife is also coming along for the journey (at my expense of course) so that will make the travel easier.

Sadly, since no Pocket PC vendor has made a device with a nice big hard drive, I'm using a mixture of devices: my Zen Vision:M, a Toshiba Gigabeat S, a Zen Micro, and my laptop. I've been ripping DVDs and converting TV shows to WMV for about a week now, and I'm simply in awe of how fantastic CloneDVD Mobile (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,10488) and AnyDVD (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,9818) are. Every developer could stand to learn from these applications in terms of ease of use. Software that works - go figure!

I emailed the developer and raved about how much I liked the software, and he gave me a promotional code to share with all of you. If you use the promotion code digitalmediathoughts in the Slysoft store (http://www.slysoft.com/?aid=50312) [affiliate], valid through 2006-09-30, you'll save $5 on a single product (such as CloneDVD Mobile), $10 on a two-product bundle (such as CloneDVD Mobile and AnyDVD), $15 on a three-product bundle, and $20 on a four-product bundle.

I'm hoping to have some connectivity at the resort in Phuket where the conference is being held, so you'll hopefully see me online here and there. I'm off to the airport - I have 39 hours of travel time to kill!

Very cool. Which computer ripped the fastest? and what was the time difference between the fastest and slowest?

As for Mobius, It sure sounds like you'll have a good time in Phuket. I will be attending the Boston event, which is just a 1.5 hour flight from me. So I don't expect to be doing much in the way of ripping. Maybe 1 or 2 videos - just in case. ;)

Does CloneDVD have a command-line mode? I'm looking for a better alternative to mencoder ("better" in the sense that I have no clue what I'm doing and cannot tweak the settings that I found on the web), but I need command-line processing. Thanks!

Definitely the 4800+ AMD X2 CPU - the slowest was the little Fujitsu laptop. I didn't time it, but I'd say for a 45 minute TV episode to full-resolution Divx, the X2 CPU did it in about 30 minutes and the little laptop took about 50 minutes.

I didn't time it, but...

That's what Spb Time is for. Or CityTime alarms ;)

Actually, CloneDVD Mobile posts the conversion time at the end of the process - I just didn't write them all down and compare. Not everything I do is a benchmark. ;-) The speed of a CloneDVD process isn't magic: the fastest CPU wins.

That's pretty good. You're little guy has a lot more power than I was expecting. 8)

Hey Jason -

Just FYI, I've been living in Thailand (in Bangkok) for the last 3 years, so give me a call if you need anything (I come to Phuket pretty often too).

The last time I was in Phuket (March) I didn't have my HTC StrTrk yet, so I don't know if there is any EDGE coverage there (there is GPRS, but you know how pokey that is). In Bangkok, and down to Pattaya, I get EDGE averaging about 200 Kbps (tested by using my phone as a modem and using a bandwidth tester).

Anyway - have fun in Phuket, and leave yourself a day or so to explore Bangkok as well. You can send me a pm on here, or just email me, and I'll take you out for a beer someplace fun ;-)

Have fun, and hope you win lots of freebies (which you can then review on the site, of course!!)

Yeah, just caught this on the news. I hope everyone's ok and that this can end peacefully. :?
