http://www.hellomoto.com/update

Motorola has just released the long awaited ROM update for their Q Smartphone. The updated can be downloaded from the Hello Moto website. Please note that preforming this upgrade will clear all of your settings and documents form the device. It's like starting all over again with a new device.

The ROM update is focused on enterprise functionality and connectivity. That means you will now have Windows Mobile Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP), Global Address Book Lookup, Remote Wipe, and Stronger Encryption. In regards to connectivity; Motorola has added Dial-up Networking (DUN) capabilities. Although, you may need some extra service from Verizon for this feature.

Please report back to us after you flash your Q and let us and other Q owners, how things went. :D

 waiting for Jerry to step up and update his Q!!!

judging from the posts at qusers.com, the update process is not clear (e.g., you have to install the *.msi file first before launching the update utility) and the update is failing for some users.

also read posts that indicate the build is the same as that released a couple of weeks ago. i upgraded my device with the older ROM and i'm sticking with it for now..

Just finished updating mine.

Cortez is correct, the instructions say nothing about installing the .MSI file downloaded as part of step 2. It needs to be installed before the .exe file downloaded in step 4.

Mine also errored out when installing the Motorola USB Flash driver. unplugging the device and hard resetting it (removing the battery) took care of this problem.

Everything after that was smooth, no problems.

I am not sure I like the "push email" thing so much. All of the SPAM I get comes through to my phone before my spam filter gets it. Also I have to manually sync if I want my messages to show up as being read/deleted/moved in my Outlook inbox. I guess I am expecting my phone to work like my Outlook, but it's not.

Got mine updated a little while ago--I also had to pull the battery during the flash update. I've read of better browser performance and overall performance improvements--my main reasons for updating. We'll see...

I ordered a Q two days ago, and it showed up yesterday with the update on it!

I got a replacement Q from Verizon last week to replace the one I had that would constantly shut down. Anyway, it already had the release installed on it as well. So, I finally have AUTD email on my Q and my Treo goes on ebay this weekend.

Well after a bit of struggling I finally got my Q upgraded. It did wipe out my phone number as well so I had to do the *228 reprogramming. I don't think I saw any mention of that in the instructions. The whole thing too about 10 minutes. I see no evidence I now have push email. When I select the "Sync as they arrive" option in AS it asks for my sms address.

What build does it show you are running? Start | Settings | More | More | About (not like you didn't already know that already)

I'm showing:
OS 5.1.195 (Build 14960.2.4.0)

Direct Push isn't an option when setting up a new mail account. Instead, go into ActiveSync and see if you can setup a Exchange account. This is where the Direct Push comes into play. (mind you - Exchange AS was there before)

Build version is good and I did set up the exchange account. I see no option anywhere for Push Email as there is on the 2125 an even my 8125.

Theres a Verizon corporate store just 3 miles from my condo so I think I'll let them do the update. Anyone notice speed improvements?

After a day with the update, I have to say the browser enhancements are nice (frames support, fast scrolling and page up/page down). Also, the device is little "snappier" overall. :)

One big disappointment for me is the battery life seems a lot worse than it was before. Just for this, I would go back to the old ROM in a minute.

On problem I noticed has not been fixed is that I cannot get a data connection after turning the radio off for a while, then back on. I get the dreaded "The line is busy." message. I have to re-boot the phone to get a data connection.

From VZW technical support:

We appreciate your interest in our data products. Although the Motorola Q update allows dial-up networking (DUN) it cannot be utilized until an updated version of the VZAccess Manager software is made available. The new VZAM client is currently been tested and will be available in the near future. Please keep in mind that it will only be compatible with Windows XP upon release (DUN will not work on Windows 2000). Additionally, Bluetooth DUN is not compatible and will not be supported. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience this matter.

I'm not sure if this was in the original ROM but there are built in file viewers now for Word, Exel and .pdf files.

That's weird - mine came with the upgraded ROM, but I don't have the viewers...I'll check the CD.

You wont see them in any start menu. Put a word doc or pdf etc on your phone and use the file manager to get to it. The viewer will open it.

The original ROM does include the viewers.

Yeah I just never ran into them.

OK - it's not a native viewer, though, right? That is, I can't open a Word attachment to an email? (I just tried, so I know I can't - just confirming)

Don't know what you mean by a "native viewer," but I can open Word and Excel dcouments attached to an email. Have you installed anything that might have broken a file association, or done any registry hacks? I think there is some type of Picsel browser implementation that provides document viewing.

I don't think so. The only hack I've done is the DNS hack, and I haven't installed anything that would mess with the file associations.
