However, the report from In-Stat <a href="http://www.in-stat.com">http://www.in-stat.com</a>, predicts that the popularity of smartphones does not necessarily mean that there will be automatic acceptance of the devices and widespread replacement of PDAs and laptops. "Wireless manufacturers have more work to do before converged phones start taking market share from other devices instead of just complementing their sales," said Bill Hughes, In-Stat analyst."</i><br /><br />We win - Smartphones rule! 8)

I wonder if their definition of PDA includes PPC phone edition devices? I'll probably be banned from PPC thoughts for saying this, but standalone PDA's are going the way of the buggy whip.

Since there is a large lump of society that absolutely cannot perceive life without a phone, then the result of the survey is hardly surprising.

But until smartphones start having more powerful features, like VGA screens, the ability to hook up to a keyboard and screen, PC or terminal for word-processor and other work, SmartPhones will continue, for most of us, to be nothing more than what the name suggests - phones with some whistles and bells.

For me, my Toshiba E830 is infinitely more useful and usable than my smart phone simply becuase of the VGA screen. Of course, what I get out of my devices is not going to be the same as what everyone else gets. If I could swap the E830 for something significantly more powerful, I would - whether it has a phone or not. If I could swap my phone for something significantly more powerful ... well unless it is also significanltly better than my PDA I doubt I would care to consider it.

Probably not. Mike is just calling victory because he's envious of our superior devices. :onfire: ;)

I'm pretty sure that, amongst others, the Treo is classified as a smartphone.

Nope, I agree with you, for better or worse.

Good, you're supposed to help me troll this thread.

Edit: Now we gotta drag some of the other PPCT'ers in here. ;)

I'm sure they included the treo but left out some of the other PPC-PE devices. They never manage to get a solid understanding of what is or isn't a Smartphone. Regardless, the connected device &lt;cough> smartphone &lt;/cough> is the future and the standalone PDA is going to be a thing of the past.

On a more serious note, it's interesting to see the blurring of lines between the Pocket PC camp and Smartphone camp. Form-factor wise, I'd say the Treo 700w/750w, Motorola Q, Samsung SGH-i320, and HTC Excalibur are all very similar.

Yup. And the two WM platforms are getting increasingly close. I don't use my touch screen nearly as much as I used to. Darius, once you get a softkey-enabled WM5 PPCPE, you'll notice the difference...
