Under the newest ROM version, what is the 3rd icon for in the Comm manager? It looks like a little envelope with an arrow on it. Mine is always grayed out

That's for direct push. (Always on email)

If you have an exhange server that you sync email against, you can have the blackberry-like experience. Which is great, but there are times when you need to stop getting email - like bed time ;) This just turns off direct push and leaves everything else running. :)

Oh... that makes sense. I thought that it might have been to turn on/off text messages. Is there a way to do that? If I don't have a text messaging plan, I don't want to get charged for people sending me texts.

As far as I know, you don't get charged for receiving text messages. Just for sending them. There's no option that I know of to turn of getting text messages. I think you're carrier would have to do something to make that happen.
