According to the article, Cingular earned $540 million last quarter, up from $147 million in the year-earlier quarter. The carrier added '1.5 million subscribers, raising its customer count to 57.3 million. Verizon Wireless has 53 million customers.'"

1.5 million new subscribers! It doesn't sound like a lot when you compare it to the 57.3 million total subscribers but 1.5 million is a accomplishment in its own right. Even if every single person that lives in Portland and Seattle, the two big cities here in the Pacific NW, go out and buy a Cingular handset you would still be about 400,000 subscribers shy of 1.5 million. As Cingular starts lighting up new UMTS/HSDPA towers in more major metropolitan areas I would expect to see these numbers skyrocket even higher!

I am glad I switched to Cingular. The coverage is great and haven't had any dropped calls.

The official press release. (http://cingular.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=press_releases&item=1618)

The financial presentation [PDF]; (http://library.corporate-ir.net/library/12/125/125269/items/205707/Cingular_Q22006_EarningsPresentation.pdf) plenty of charts and graphs to interpret the earnings. Also shows the AT&T / Cingular cell tower integration and billing system integration progress.
