So it should come as no surprise that the reviews of this device would be following soon. And now the first review is here. PPCReviews.net has posted a good first look at the device. One of the interesting things I noticed is that the review phone came with 2 batteries, both of which are 880mAh. I would prefer that to a larger longer life battery which requires that you carry a second battery cover door around with you as well. Anyway, give it a read and let us know what you think!

The original review in French can be found here, BabelFish English translation here.

That's one nice looking device! Although, sadly, Samsung isn't exactly GSM friendly either - they usually release CDMA device first. Us GSMers are going to have a long wait to get a device like this.

edit: oh, wait a second, this is a GSM device? Sweet! Now the problem becomes getting one on this side of the world. :?

Jason

I'd get it next month while in Euroland - except its only triband - no 850. And in US/Cingular I need that :(

I can prob get you one and ship it on my return to the states if you really need it :)

They are not available until July 31st I think. As for where... I have no clue. I wish I did.

Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Kiev and other major cities have Samsung stores directly (most you can fill out VAT exemption forms if leaving within 30 days). Otherwise, most of the Duty Free shops carry extensive Nokia and Samsung lines.

Can someone fill me in - is there a price difference for a OEM to make these Quadband vs triband? I would think for minimal to no cost difference they may as well release all GSM as Quad-band. With Nokia opening direct retail unlocked phones stores, starting in Chicago, I'm betting Samsing and others will follow suit. Also, with the advent of Amazon and Exspansys/Mobileplanet selling unlocked phones online - I would think it is a burgeoning market that they could feed.

Kind of makes our duty free shops seem lame. :?

Well, there is a cost associated with everything. If it's not the hardware cost it would be the testing cost. I can't imagine that the overall impact on the price of the phone is that big a difference.

As for selling unlocking phones, it's not that as easy as it may seem. They need to spend a fair amount of money to legally import those devices. Especially if they are not being made available for resale in a given country by the manufacturer. They can import them illegally, but then you're going to run into problems with service. :s

Samsung has made no announcements in regards to a North American version. :(

They'd have to release it as an updated model; US has to have the 850 band to make it widely usable. Stupid US, having multiple requirements and not standardized like Euroland.

Well, unless they sport the 850 band, it's not going to be too successful in the US. I haven't heard any announcement from Samsung about adding or making a US version.
