It shows the percentage of different devices that have been sold over the last 30 days. The three best selling devices over the last 30 days are the i-mate SP3i (22%) and the Sierra Wireless Voq (19%) and the i-mate SP3 (13%). Combined, they make up a surprising 54% of Windows Mobile-based phone sales! All 3 of these devices are running the older Windows Mobile 2003 SE operating system. They are all great devices, even though some of you might not agree with the Voq. ;) However, Kris just told us about all these great deals on new Windows Mobile 5 based devices for just $50. So, who's buying all these older phones at 2 to 3 times the price? In an interesting twist, the Expansys Canadian site shows the K-Jam as the leading phone with a whooping 63% of sales. It may not be a Smartphone, but at least it's a Windows Mobile 5 based device. :D

WHAT!??! Where's the MPX220? :o
The VOQ has 19% - I thought that device was so-so.

I gather I am firmly one of "the others" (pardon the Lost reference) because my MpX 200, i600, and 2125 don't appear on their own. Just not part of the "in" crowd I guess.

Ah I was just thinking about moto myself then I realised that their phones aren't that smart. So they wouldn't be counted.

the mpx220, i600 and 2125 are not listed because expansys/mobile planet does not sell them through their website. i dont think i have ever seen a locked smartphone/carrier branding device in their catalog.

I bought my SP3i from Expansys (Mobileplanet) a year ago for about $480+. Nice to see the prices....uh, well...cut in half. Whattayagonnado?

I think you guys will find this graph illuminating.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1861732,00.asp

The numbers break down in 2005 as:

WM PPCPhone......... 17%......... 1989367
WM Smartphone...... 40%......... 4724747
WM PPC................... 43%......... 5060632

Total.........................................11774746

MS Smartphone users obviously have an inferiority complex due to the devices being more limited, getting less attention and less software, but they actually outsell PPCPhones 2:1, and have for a while. They probably deserve more respect.

I like the amazon.com site better. It's updated hourly under the "best selling" >> "cell phones" listing. It just seems to be more current.

There's a vast difference between buying a device from a carrier for a discounted price and buying an unlocked device from expansys. There is 1 year or 2 year contract to think about if you want a subsidized device. Only a few of us are lucky enough to have a new device come out when we're eligible for upgrade, and after that we can't sign another contract for a year or two.

I was also going to be one of those 22% buying the SP3i - but luckily I was able to get an SDA for cheap. I won't be upgrading when the next wave of devices come out. :)

Frankly, if I could have gotten the SP3i for even cheaper than the SDA, I would have gone for it in a heartbeat. The SDA isn't that much better than the old stuff.

I assume the VOQ is doing so well because it's being sold at a bargain basement price.

$100 for a Smartphone with a built in keyboard - that's a pretty good deal. It's just way to large compared to other phones. :(

I just purchased an SP3i and did if because it was unlocked. No carrier contract, no rebates, no foolin'. When to T-Mobile and got a pre-paid SIM, worked like a charm. With there PAYG plan, spend $100 bucks and all your minutes are good for a full year. Well worth keeping the wife happy without a $40/month minimum plan just to get a decent phone.

Really? That rocks! Man, Canada is falling so far behind. :(
