View Full Version : memory shortage!!! (imate sp5 qtek 8310)

ok once and for all what is the deal with the memory shortage problem with the new imate sp5 and qtek 8310? There's only 16 mb of storage and most of it is taken up with default items. Only two maybe three ringtones can be put on before the phone doesnt even function anymore. Is there some other way to store and use memory on the "memory card" like we all thought???

This is a dumb problem to be having with such a smartphone!

 ideas?

Weird, I've never gotten this (but I have a 1 gig memory card where I install all programs).

i too haven't been having any problems with memory. yes i would prefer more, but even with total commander, smart explorer and tcpmp installed in main memory before my 1gb came it was fine.

Smartmonitor says I have constantly over 20 Megs of memory free, which is plenty for running programs.

There is a difference between program memory and storage memory on these Smartphones. The problem is that the advertising states there is 64 MB of RAM (program memory available) and 64 MB of ROM, or storage. However, what is available to users is 45 MB of RAM for programs and roughly 18 MB for storage. That is a big hit on storage. Ringtones are going to take storage space, do need to be careful with how many ringtones you load up on.

i just put all my ringtones in the storage card's root folder (\STORAGE CARD\) and I dont ever have a problem using them as ringtones. as for the storage if you do a lot of web browsing make sure to clear the cache every now and then. i just did it and cleared 6mb of data right there.

also its a good idea to clean out all your emails, especially the ones with attachments, that you are not using. that clears up a lot of memory as well.

right now i am running with about 7mb of free storage space. i would love to have more, mostly due to MMS messages needing at least 4mb of free space to send and receive.

I have done the IE cache/history/cookies hack the puts it on the storage card. That really saves some space.

At the moment I have 7.5mb free memory, and 25Mb program memory.

As I've moaned about this before, I'm hit very badly with this too. I have quite a few contacts (250 or so), some with pictures and quite a busy diary. I also store a lot of things in "to do" lists. I need Fizz Weather installed in main memory (because it has a home screen plugin), but apart from that I have everything stored on a 512mb miniSD card. I've given up on having Battery Pack Pro because I just can't fit it.

I constantly run out of memory. The internal storage card is eaten by email, tasks etc and because of this ridiculous bug whereby you need 4Mb free to send/recieve MMS messages, I just get "memory full" errors constantly. Despite rather irritatingly having 300mb free on the miniSD that I can't use. I've even removed the Lines/Backgammon apps that came with the phone - with them still installed I could barely synchronise my calendar and send an MMS message. Bizarre.

It's driving me up the wall, as otherwise this phone is really quite nice.

Am particularly irritated because I got stuck today trying to install the MS compact framework 2...

Tell me about it. This is so frustrating.

On a similar note, does anyone know of an app to tell you exactly which folders are taking up all the space? I'm sure I can delete all sorts of nonsense, but I'm not sure where to start.

I used to have a thing called TreeSize for my PocketPC, but it was made by IA Style who of course exist no longer.

Actually - Smart Explorer (http://www.binarys.com/download_en.asp) would appear to at least work this out if you do "properties" on something. Going to try and use it to investigate a bit. :)

OK, I deleted a few things. Here's the list:

Ones I did delete:
\Application Data\Home\Splash.bmp 300kb (startup screen). Deleted it, and the same screen still gets displayed on bootup, so no idea where it's getting it from.
\Application Data\Home\anything you recognise as being from an install that didn't uninstall properly

Ones I didn't:
\dochive\system.hv 400kb (appears to be the system registry)
\docprof\default\user.hv 400kb (appears to be the system registry)
\Application Data\Tao\intent\rofs_target.zip 170kb (this appears to be something to do with the wireless networking)
\Documents and Settings\default.vol 132kb (sort of looks like a mounted volume, so chickened out)
\My Documents\UAContents (looks important)
\Program Files\SAPI\CommandModel1.bin 400kb (according to http://www.beyondthetech.com/blogs/wm/2005/10/the_top_50_things_to_know_abou.html this is your voice tag database - don't know if I need that or not)

Ones I'd like to but can't:
\My Documents\Frames\*.* 200kb (just some random GIFs)
\My Documents\My Pictures\*.* 150kb (not my pictures at all, some junk that came with it)
\My Documents\My Sounds\*.* 50kb (same again)

Windows takes up 50mb, and is by far the largest user of space on the device (as you might expect!). The great majority of Windows goes straight into the \Windows folder rather than subdirs, and I didn't see anything obvious (BMPs, WAVs) that might be deletable.

If anyone has any other space-freeing ideas, get them up here. :)

...
\My Documents\UAContents (looks important)

\My Documents\My Pictures\*.* 150kb (not my pictures at all, some junk that came with it)
\My Documents\My Sounds\*.* 50kb (same again)You may be able to move these to \Storage Card\My Documents\. Use the built-in file explorer if you're having troubles, as sometimes this works better than 3rd party solutions. You may need to copy them, then delete the old files too (rather than trying to move them).

That said, here's how you move UAContents and Frames without losing functionality.

NOTE: I tested these changes on my T-Mobile US SDA, which is the same HTC device as the Cingular phone, but the software may be slightly different. Please realize you may screw up your phone if you do something wrong below. Don't come crying if you!

The "Frames" folder is easy. Just open the camera application, select "menu" > "4 Options" > "3 Photo" and change the Template folder to "Storage Card". Then actually move the "Frames" folder to \Storage Card\My Documents\

The UAContents folder is for MMC templates and required a few different registry changes. First, stop Messaging (AKA Pocket Outlook AKA email program) from running (using xBar or the like). Then move the "UAContents" folder to \Storage Card\My Documents\. To tell the MMC app to use the new location, you need to change some registry entries.

NOTE: Do NOT edit your registry unless you know what you're doing!

In HKLM\Software\ArcSoft\ArcSoft MMS UA\Config\Folder change all values starting with \My Documents to \Storage Card\My Documents (there are 12 entries here).

Once this is done, you're almost there. This last part took some effort to figure out, though. The file "\Storage Card\My Documents\UAContents\Templates\MMSTemplates0409.inf" is the next issue. That file is the list of templates available to the MMC app. It's in a strange format, and hex editing in the \Storage Card\ didn't work. What I did to work around this issue was to use the template then save it over itself. This updated the .INF but didn't delete the original files. I then edited the .INF file to use the old numbers. For some reason the new copies were much smaller than the originals, which is why I took the extra step.

The great majority of Windows goes straight into the \Windows folder rather than subdirs, and I didn't see anything obvious (BMPs, WAVs) that might be deletable. Many of these are in ROM, and as such don't need to be deleted.

I had the same problem. I couldnt download MMS Pictures that people sent to me. The easiest way to get rid of the sounds and pictures that came with your phone is to use the Explore option on Active Sync and do it from your computer. Also, did you clear your internet Cache? After only 3 weeks, mine had almost 6 megs of crap.

Open internet explore and select
Menu
9 Tools
3 Options

go Down to Memory and hit select and you can see how much is Memory is used.

Press the clear button, wait a few seconds or a minute and you have gained back some of your memory. Hope this helps
