Other than the idea of just having "one" device to carry, which I think is a pipe dream, I don't see people running their batteries down to listen to music. I suppose this device could power the phone at the same time though.

Hi Jerry -

I don't agree actually - I think these devices are hugely interesting and I see this being very much a direction in which Smartphones will head. It's this sort of thing that will turn the great mass of the population towards the "computer in your pocket" generation of Smartphones.

A huge amount of the compression/storage technology required for music playing is already in your phone, and it's even a ready-made sound producing device. In a lot of ways it seems far more natural for a Smartphone to take on an iPod-type role than it does for it to become a PDA, and I'm sure I'm not the only person using mine as a PDA.

The point about running the batteries flat is an interesting one. I don't know about other people but I sync/charge my Smartphone at work and have a charger at home as well - if anything I think it would be much _easier_ not to have yet another device to remember to charge up.

Erm... small disclaimer here is that I don't use my SP as a music player, but I don't have an iPod either. I (motor)bike to work so there's not really any time I'd listen to one. I did sync some music onto it using the new Media sync feature of ActiveSync though, as I don't get out much.

Currently nothing stands a chance against the iPod for music playback, not even dedicated audio players.

I will continue to use iPod for music and Smartphone for phone that is.

I know I'm in the minority here. It seems you are correct because more and more of these phones are showing up.

Same here. :)

Sure, I'm not really suggesting that the phones are anywhere near the interface/audio quality of the iPod yet. But I see it as a direction things will go in.

Look at it another way... what if your sexy iPod took a SIM card? :P

Umm, okay. My phone my music player, simply because it's adequate (but not outstanding) for the task. It's good enough that I haven't gotten around to getting a music player better than my phone and the so-so player I have now.

Batteries? Bah. The phone lasts the two hour round trip bicycle ride to work, plus the occassional trip to the gym, before it gets resynched and recharged at home.

As for the item at hand, I just don't see when I'd use it. But they sell well enough for iPods, I guess if there are others like me that use their phone as their music player there'd be a market.

Well, I use my phone for music all the time. But I'm mobile when I do it. I'm not at home or in the office and using my phone to listen to music. So, I don't know where I would use a music dock.

i find myself using my phone more towards a media device than a PDA. Lately I have been taking public transportation to work. in my city gas is expensive and the train/lightrial can get me to work faster than dealing with rush hour traffic on the highway. while on the train though since im not driving i really dont have anything to do so i just load up a tv show or movie that i encoded (see my guide (http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8665)) or listen to my music or even watch the CES2006 keynotes from bill gates ;)[/url]

I plan to buy a mini sd card for my smt 5600 and would like a
program to help me organize the music and possible video files.

Thanks for any suggestions and experience.

Active Sync 4.1 and Windows Media Player 10.
In WMP10, there is a "Sync" tab. You can set up playlists and you have the option to auto or manually sync the playlists with the phone (including your miniSD card).

I'll look at the manual for the smt 5600.

I imagine that there are some programs out there though.

I see now that you meant an application to run on the SMT5600, my bad. I just sync a playlist from my PC to the storage card. It created a file called "Music" on the storage card and dumps everything there.

Sorry, don't know what is out there for apps to run on the 5600 to manage a/v stuff. Haven't looked.

That's the same thing people where thinking when Motorola first talked about the ROKR

A real iPod made by apple that could take phone calls would be great.
