So can this be done in such a way that I don't have to go through a million menu selections?

I just spent some time at a Cingular store playing with this thing and it seems " fairly " intuitive.

Getting the speakerphone on is several clicks away so it's not too bad.

If I want to just dial via voice it seems a lot farther away.

Are there other apps which make this a lot better? I heard about one called FONIX voice dial.

My old flip phone had a configurable option that made it go into voice dial 1st then time out for keyboard dialing. This phone has a LOT of options so I'm hoping it's a setup problem or there's 3rd party solution.

Some insights please??? Even a different phone.

That depends on what software you are using. The voice tags that comes with the 5600 is pretty easy to setup and quick to use. From the homepage you can instantly start to dial a contact (for Mike just dial 6-4-5-3 and your phone will filter your contacts down to anything that has a first letter MNO, a second letter of GHI, a third letter of JKL, etc....) Then scroll down and highlight the contact. Press the action button to open the selected contact. Then press Menu / Add Voice Tag and record your voice tag for that contact. I find it pretty quick and easy to setup.

Um, actually the speakerphone is one button push away. Press and hold the green call button while on a call and the phone will automatically switch to speakerphone. Press and hold again, and it returns to normal mode.

I'm not sure about the third party tools since I don't use any of them. It's my expereince that the voice tags and the smartdial features are more than enough for me to find the contact I'm looking for. 8)

*???? dial? I'm try to do a voice command not dial with my fingers.

*Thanks I'll try that the next time. The sales person had me go through more than that.

*I guess I don't understand what you're saying but I'm talking about issuing a voice command to dial some one. Those handfull of people you repeatedly call at one or two numbers. Pretty basic really, issue a verbal command and the phone dials without me having to touch buttons or look at it. Does it have to be more complicated than this?

I've editted your post above to correctly use the QUOTE tag. It makes things much easier to follow and it's really not that hard to figure out. ;)

Yes, you are. And I'm trying to explain how you would go about setting up Voice Tags (a program that comes with your phone) to do the same thing.

Ya, there are a number of different ways you can activate the speakerphone. But holding the dial button is, by far, the easiest and best. ;)

I'm trying to explain how you can use Voice Tags to dial contacts on your phone. While Voice Tags is not a true voice recognition application, it can easily handle the handful of people you repeatedly call - and more. It does require a quick little setup, but once that's done, you simple press and hold the volume button for 1 second and then say the voice tag you have recorded. It even works over selected Bluetooth headsets like the Bluespoon AX. So you can quickly and easily call someone with a simple press of a button on your headset. Very cool and it's all free - no need to invest in a third party application. 8)

This site works differently than any others I've seen. If you simply select quote it doesn't work properly. Oh well, I hope the * have made it clear enough.

Mike thanks for all the input it's been extremely helpful. I doubt Alexander Bell could even have imagined this scenario ... Two tin cans and a piece of string were considered cool when I was a kid. It took almost no money to have fun....

Really? We're running PHPBB which is the most common forum software on the net. Ah well, no worries, I was able to work it out, and hopefuly others did too. ;)

Times sure have changed, eh? My daughter won't even look twice at the tin cup deal. It's been toy phones (or the real thing) from day 1 for her. :(

Didn't I read that the new version of "Voice Commander" from Microsoft would come out to support smartphone devices as well as pocketpc devices?

Has anyone even tried to use Voice COmmander on a smartphone? I would hope that a new release of the software would come out soon - seeing that we are all using the "same" OS - Windows Mobile 5.0...

well, the current version doesn't. Only Microsoft knows about future versions. I hope it will, but right now, I haven't heard anything. :(

Voice Tags
You can record a voice tag for a phone number, E-mail address,
or Web page address that is stored in your Contacts.
Then, when you verbally speak the voice tag, your Smartphone
automatically dials the associated phone number,
opens an E-mail message using the associated address,
or goes to the associated Web page.
Creating a Voice Tag for a phone number, E-mail address,
or URL in your Contacts:
1. In the Home screen, press the Right Softkey (“Contacts”)
or select Contacts from the Start menu.
2. Select the desired Contact entry, then press the Action
button to access the related Contact card. All data entered
for that Contact will be listed.
3. Select the phone number, E-mail address, or Web page
address for which you want to assign a Voice Tag.
4. Press the Right Softkey to open the menu, and select Add
Voice Tag.
5. After the message/beep, begin recording the voice tag
(preferably one easy-to-recognize word).
6. Your phone will automatically play back the voice tag. If
successful, a message will indicate such. Select OK to
close the message screen.
7. The Add Speed Dial screen will display. It displays,
and allows you to edit, the Name, Value, and Keypad
Assignment. Press the Left Softkey (“Done”) when ready
to save the new voice tag.
To use the voice tag, press and hold the Volume Down button
on the left side of the phone for three seconds in the Home
screen, to invoke the recording function. Say the word that
you recorded as a voice tag. The phone plays back the voice
tag and then dials the associated phone number; or opens a
new E-mail message; or goes to the associated Web page
(whichever you chose prior to creating it in Step 3 above)

--Smartphone User Manual

You can also create a voice tag for programs you use a lot too!

Hope it helps!

That is INCREDIBLE! I always did the right softkey and option 4 or 5 which sucked if the person picked up to quick cause the softkey menu would dissapear. Now I can be smooth and quick :)

Also if you already have voice tags trained just hold down the 'down volume' button and it will bring you to the prompt... chances are that would have already been said but i was to lazy to read all the way

It's not just the down volume button. ;) Just press and hold the volume button - doesn't matter if it's up or down. :)
