It was semi-auto style handsets that companies brought out to the market years ago, emphasizing convenience. Now, they are back with slimmer and smaller design, adding usefulness to convenience. A research engineer from Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the company developing and providing auto-folder module, was at KES 2005 and said, 'Auto-folder is especially useful when your cell phone is extremely small or thin, or when you have to open your phone with one hand.'"</i><br /><br />This just screams <i>"I'm too lazy to flip my phone myself!"</i> Sad, truly sad.

This would be a great thing for Moto with a twist. Push the button and the phone just falls apart. Saves one the trouble of exchanging it 5 times.

I just got done doing a 1 month phone trial for an unnamed company that is coming out with an unnamed device (all due to NDA's of course) and the phone I was testing had this feature.

In many ways it made sense. Although it took a while to get used to it, what I did notice is that switching to using a phone without the button felt wrong after using the button for a month. For opening a phone one handed it really is very nice. I can't tell you how many times, especially in the car, you just don't have 2 hands to open a flip phone (and yes, I know you're not supposed to opening phones in cars anwyay...)

But the best part of it all is that it's really like having one of those old Star Trek communicators in your hand, the kind Captian Kirk and Spock and the gang had. In fact, I could see **** company using Shatner to sell a Star Treckized version of the phone...

Could be useful. Imagine having a bag/briefcase in one hand, papers under the arm, etc. and your flip-phone rings. Kind of like an umbrella that opens with a push of a button... (I'm writing this from NYC where we've been having rain for many days now)

When I reviewed the Mitac Mio (my only expereince with a flip phone) I would routinely open and close it with one hand. I guess that's why I don't see the use for this. I'm sure it's a nice feature to have, and you might even miss it when it's gone, but it just seems like overkill to me.

I agree that having a button to auto-open a flip phone would be very useful. Especially when in the car.

I use a candybar shaped phone, so I don't have to deal with this problem.
