Hi,

I'm new to the smartphone world...loving it so far. My wife and I have Audiovox SMT5600's.

Understanding the phone has a version of windows....is there any risk in loading themes created by other people? Does this introduce a risk of a social virus or anything?

I recently tried to install a theme: (.hme) and the phone warned me about installing items from an unknown source.

Thanks!

PS Does anyone make a colored case for the SMT5600?

Well....

The short answer is don't worry it's safe. :)

The more detailed answer is this, the homescreen itself is nothing more than an XML file and a JPG file for the background. There is nothing much that can be done here. The risk - if there is any - would be in installing third party homescreen plugins. Stuff like ananlog clocks, or calendars, etc... Now, when I say risk, it's a limited risk. Chances are extremely slim that it's a virus. First of all, there isn't any for the Smarphone plateform. Secondly, they would only have access to unprotected files. It shouldn't be able to access the phone's dialler. Unless of course you have changed the level of application security on your phone.

So, back to the short answer, it's safe, you have nothing to worry about. 8)

I am also a new SMT5600 owner. I see no direction in the manual about where to put any .hme files in order to use them as home screens. Where do they go on the phone? :?

You can stash them anywhere, then using the file manager on the phone navigate to where ever you put it. Click on it and it will install the theme. The .hme file on your phone will also disappear after that so keep a copy on your PC.

Oh yes...WELCOME :D
