With this acquisition the company wants to accelerate development of its dual mode WiFi-GSM/GPRS VoIP phone based on Windows CE, the C1250i. RV Tec develops and designs wireless handheld devices ranging from smartphones and wireless PDA/Pocket PCs for the consumer market to special purpose wireless data terminals designed for the enterprise and vertical markets. The investment in RV Tec was done by Calypso to speed up the production and delivery to market of the Calypso' ASNAP technology on the C1250i WiFi/GSM-GPRS VoIP smartphone. The Calypso's C1250i runs on Intel PXA series processor and Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 operating system. Calypso's ASNAP technology will enable cellular phones to automatically detect any available Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and then seamlessly switch between the signals of standard cellular link towers and an available short-range broadband network such as cable or DSL with Wi-Fi)."</i><br /><br />With WiFi support becoming available in some Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones, this is something I would like to see more of. At this point, Calypso is working on a Windows CE 5 device, but who's to say they can't port the final product and sell this to the Smartphone crowd.
