The rumors are saying that this new device will be called the SPV C600 - not much of a surprise there. It will weight in at 105 grams, measure 108x46x19mm, a 320x240 screen with 65K colours, 1.3 Mega Pixel camera, and have GPRS and EDGE compatibility. It's unknown what version of Windows Mobile this will have. However, I think Windows Mobile 5.0 is a safe guess. It also sports a real joystick and not the rocket switch that the C500/Audiovox SMT5600 has. I'm more than a little disappointed that there is no WiFi on this model. I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever see a Smartphone with WiFi. :? While this looks like a great phone, does it really offer enough to make you want to upgrade?

Google translation can be found here.

It had me at 320x240. :D I don't truly care all that much about WiFi, so the added resolution and EDGE support is enough for me...hopefully a faster CPU and more RAM/ROM in there as well.

EDGE, a better screen, a pointer stick and is it worth upgrading to? What am I missing?

My friend passed on the SMT5600 for a Sony Ericsson 750a - primarily because it had a 320x240 display (really bright).

Now after seeing it, I'd think twice about getting the SMT5600 - even though I really do love it, there is room for improvement and that's what the SPV600 gives us.

Now when can we expect a FCC search stating that the phone will be available in the US? :)

Impressive specs. I could do with that.

While zero Wi-Fi is a concern, I guess it's not the end of things. A phone is a phone after all.

The addition of EDGE is all I needed to hear. 8)

I see my 5600 returning to eBay come September...

I'm not sure where the expectation for wifi is coming from... I doubt we'll see it before there are some improvements to either battery capacity or the power draw that wifi demands. Or are there some strides forward in those technologies that I'm missing?

That said, the better screen, edge, and pointer stick are all things that will see me upgrading. Hey and maybe the camera will actually be viable...

Any word on the processor / memory specs?

I'd wait till early October...

You may see a US release of this one (w/ 850) around that time...

Hopefully we'll see this on mobileplant (which BTW got purchased by expansys) in september.

I'm thinking of getting the Audiovox for a year - until this gets out - deployed and used (which I don't see until Q4 at best - AND THEN not here in the USA at all - )

ditto that - the only 2 things I have been waiting for before buying a Windows SmartPhone are resolution better than 176x220 - ideally QVGA, and an updated version of Windows Mobile.

This has both, it's about the same size/weight as the previous incarnation (a la O2 Xphone IIm, C550, etc).

It might not look beautiful (I'm sure O2 will pretty it up for an O2 Xphone III or something), but it is exactly what I've been waiting for.

Oh wait - okay, if it was a slider, that would be even better (as in, slides keypad under screen to make it shorter), but I can definitely deal with this form factor.

So - when will this thing start showing up in MBK and Panthip Plaza here in Bangkok, I wonder - hopefully soon!!!!!

Says,
- Version de Windows Mobile inconnue (WM2003SE à ce jour)
I don't read French but can make out WM2003SE. Hope not. seems as though lots of OEMs missed the announcement back in May.

If you run Version de Windows Mobile inconnue (WM2003SE à ce jour) through the Google Language tools, you get: Version of Mobile Windows unknown (WM2003SE to date) ;)

However, I do agree with you. We are hearing a lot of info about upcoming 2003 devices. What happened to all the WM5 devices that we were promised earlier this year?

The expectation of wifi is coming from the basis that HTC Tornado on which the C600 is apparently based is wifi capable and that the C600's counterparts, Qtek 8300/8310 and i-Mate SP5/SP5m also based on the Tornado all include wifi.

For people like me, who spend a lot of time away from their desk but need to keep track of their e-mail, wifi means constant contact without huge GPRS costs.

The time I do spend at my desk my phone is constantly docked, so battery life is not an issue, if I weren't using wifi (weekends etc.) I would disable it.
