ringtone maker?

What is a good free program to make ringtones with. and i have a mpx220 phone and i cant find a way to store ringtones on my memorycard and be able to use them. this means i can only have a few custom ringtones cause i can only store them on my phone.

I've heard that Xingtone (I think that's the name) now works with the Moto and Audiovox Smartphones. However, that application will send your ringtone to your phone over your carriers network. Which I've always seen as a waste since I can just copy the file over. :roll:

All you really need is some audio software that will allow you to cut and trim your sound files. Anything from Download.com should work. Does anyone else here have a specific program they would recommend?

I think the only limitation is the bit rate. I wouldn't use anything over 128kbps. That's only a guess. ;)

I used Audicity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) for this purpose.

The process takes a while to get it right but I eventually figured it out, so I'm sure darn near any can.

cool, thanks for the tip. I've been looking for a good cheap/free tool. I'll have to give this a try.

I use CDex (freeware) to convert MP3s to WAVs, then use WavePad (freeware) to edit them. Since I have an iPAQ 6315 with low speaker volume, Wavvepad lets me amplify the volume 300%, and convert the file to ANY bitrate. Thta gives me VERY small ringtone files.

What formats are supported for ringones? The pre-installed ones are all .mid files, but what format are the Cingular "music" ringtones? I have a ton of MP3's on my miniSD card, but I don't know how to get them to show up in the list of available ringtones.

I guess you can check, but sometimes the lowest bitrate supported is about 64kbps, so try seperate formats and load them up.
Normally Mp3 is just fine, mostly supported and included tones are mp3 and midi. Do not use wave.

You can also use wma for ringtones. To use a file (mp3, wav, wma, or midi) it has to be in \Storage\Application Data\Sounds. Just copy the audio file(s) there from the miniSD card and you should be good to go.

I have several wav files that I use as ringtones. The thing is, you don't want CD-quality wav files for this purpose. Several of the wav files that I use are 8000Hz, 8 bit mono files and they work fine for their purpose. CD quality-wav files are 44100Hz, 16 bit stereo pcm wave format files.

no matter how low you set the bitrate for wav, it is for your best interest to use mp3 if you phone supports it, since the same bit rate for wave and mp3 is big difference in file size.
