View Full Version : My First Look at Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone

It has been a hectic week in the Windows Mobile world. Lots of announcements from Microsoft and their partners. Lots of excitement. Everyone is eagerly waiting to get their hands on a Windows Mobile 5.0 based Smartphone, which is still months away from its formal market launch. I couldn't wait, so I decided to get my hands on one. ;-) So last night I got one to play with. Spent a long time fiddling with the menus, trying to figure out the changes. <br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-Start.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><br />I am sure by now you must have seen tons of screen shots, so I have tried my best to minimize the repetitions. And in case you are wondering <i>"How on earth did Kris get his hands on the unreleased Smartphone?"</i> Well I have my sources. And the source in this case is the Microsoft Device Emulator. Here is my report in pictures... <!> <br /><br /><span><b>Lets Click "Start"</b></span><br /><br />Before I begin I would like to mention that I have added the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition screen shots for comparison purposes. ;-) The larger (QVGA) image to the left will always be Windows Mobile 5.0 based and the image on the right shows the current WM2003 SE screens.<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-6HS.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>The Home Screen looks the same</i><br />I could not find any support for themes. The Settings applet for changing Home Screens is the same as the one in WM2003 SE. Microsoft has added a <i>MSN Default</i> home screen to the layout collection. More on that in the Pocket MSN section.<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-MenuWM5-7.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-Start.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>The new Start menu</i> <br />Windows Mobile 5.0 (image on the left) sports an icon based Start menu. Definitely makes the menu look more pretty. I have heard there is a way to switch the icon based Start menu into the list based one, but haven't figured it out. :-(<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-ANI.gif" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>The icons change when selected 8)</i> <br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-CallHistoryWM5-19.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-CallInfo.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Call History details view</i> <br />I was hoping that Microsoft would have fixed one of the most annoying things in WM2003SE. To view the call time you have to scroll down. It is not immediately visible. Am I the only one annoyed by this? :? <br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-ContactWM5-17.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-CallInfo2.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>In-call screen simplified...something is missing</i> <br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-ContactWM5-18.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>The missing items have been found</i> <br />The <i>View Contact</i> and <i>View Calendar</i> links have now been moved into the Menu. <br /> <br /><br /><span><b>ActiveSync</b></span><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-ASWM5-28.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-ActiveSync.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>ActiveSync menu options</i> <br />ActiveSync has been improved quite a bit, but more in terms of the under-the-hood plumbing than in the user interface. ActiveSync will now be able to sync contact caller ID photos also. Anyone know what <i>"Connect via DMA"</i> means? :?<br /><br /> <PAGEBREAK> <br /><span><b>Internet Explorer</b></span><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-PIEWM5-1.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><i>Download progress bar in the Internet Explorer</i> <br />This is a welcome addition. :-)<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-PIEWM5-2.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-IEMenu.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>The new Menu options in the Internet Explorer</i><br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-PIEWM5-3.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><i>Full Screen mode</i> <br />The View menu option enables you to switch into Full Screen mode. And now you can quickly remove the pictures from the web page. :)<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-PIEWM5-4.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><i>Full Screen mode in action</i> <br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-PIEWM5-5.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><i>Having trouble reading the text?</i> <br />The new Internet Explorer <i>Zoom</i> menu option lets you change the text size quickly.<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-PIEWM5-6.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><i>Send Link via E-Mail</i> <br />Want to share a web page link with someone? Now you can do it with the Windows Mobile 5.0 Internet Explorer.<br /> <br /> <PAGEBREAK> <br /><span><b>Pocket MSN</b></span><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-4PocketMSN1.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Pocket MSN is bundled along with the Windows Mobile OS</i><br />Pocket MSN enables access to MSN Messenger, Hotmail and MSN Mobile. Microsoft seems to have put in a lot of effort into this application.<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-4PocketMSN2Options.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Options menu lets you configure the Pocket MSN experience</i><br />I was intrigued by the <i>SMS</i> option.<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-4PocketMSN2SMS.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Pocket MSN can use SMS for transferring data instead of the GPRS or cellular data network</i><br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-3HSSignInError.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Out of luck!</i><br />I was unable to connect to the MSN server. Don't know if it was a user error or server error. :-( So I cannot provide anymore screen shots for Pocket MSN.<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-3HSSignIn.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Pocket MSN integrated into the home screen</i><br />I found a home screen layout named <i>MSN Default.</i> It adds a section for Pocket MSN to the home screen. Since I could not sign into the MSN server, I don't know what the overall experience is like. I am guessing that the Pocket MSN home screen section will show the Hotmail new E-Mail count and MSN Messenger status.<br /><br /><PAGEBREAK> <br /><span><b>Messaging</b></span><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-MessagingWM5-9.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-Mail.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Messaging application undergoes a face lift</i> <br />Notice the highlighted sender's name and subject? The QVGA screen will definitely pack more message text. :-) <br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-MessagingWM5-12.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-Mail2.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>The new Menu options for the compose message screen</i> <br />The <i>Check Names</i> menu option looks interesting. And why is <i>Cancel Message</i> at position number 6 in the menu instead of being the last one at number 7?<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-MessagingWM5-13.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><i>Insert a picture or voice note into the mail message</i> <br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-MessagingWM5-14.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-Mail4.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Message Options now lets you mark the mail as important</i> <br />I wonder where the <i>Request message delivery notification</i> option went? :? <br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-TextMessagingWM5-27.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-SP03-Mail3.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>SMS Text Message size counter has a new location</i> <br /><br />The thing that I was hoping to find in Windows Mobile 5.0 was improved message folder management. The ability to clear out folders or mail accounts, but I could not find any option for that. :( <br /><br /><PAGEBREAK> <br /><span><b>Pictures and Videos</b></span><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-5PV.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Pictures and Videos application</i><br />Now that the camera is almost standard on the Smartphones, this new application provides the handy album functionality.<br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-5PV2.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Some of the options provided by this application</i><br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-5PV4.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>The menu options when viewing a picture</i><br /><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/Kris-May2005-WM5-5PV3.png" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <br /><i>Screensaver?</i><br />I think this is a pretty neat feature. And found some new interesting facts about the new Smartphone. Overall, I feel that in terms of the user interface most of the changes are cosmetic, with a couple of features here and there. The real change has been under-the-hood and the developer tools, which will enable the mobile application developers to write powerful next generation Smartphone apps. That is what I am looking forward to. And that is the reason why I would be upgrading my Smartphone. ;-)

Anyone know what "Connect via DMA" means?

DMA is the transport the emulator uses to connect to the desktop for debugging and whatnot. I've never actually seen that menu item, but I bet it can be used to get the emulator to sync sync with activesync on the PC. If you go into ActiveSync's connections options on your desktop you'll see DMA listed as one of the serial ports.

Excellent post Kris! I've been looking up at all of these pictures for the last hour or so, and it just makes me want WM5 on my device even more!

KRIS, Awesome post. :werenotworthy:
I'm gonna read it a coupla more times to day just to make sure I have the true flavor of WM2005.

They've come along way. I'm really excited.

Thanks for the great review Kris. It looks like the changes to Smartphone are minimal, with the major revisions coming on the PPC end.

Perhaps the biggest change will be more stability, which wouldn't show up in a screen shot comparo.

And I thought that you got some hardware powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone but judging from the X symbol in battery icon I see that you just review emulator.

I think, that between real hardware and emulator there are some differences so maybe you could entitle it "My First Look at Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone emulator" to make it clear...

Anyway: anybody was playing with hardware powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone already? Is SQL Mobile in ROM or must be installed separately?

Kris does mention that it's from the emulator in the second paragraph.

And in case you are wondering "How on earth did Kris get his hands on the unreleased Smartphone?" Well I have my sources. And the source in this case is the Microsoft Device Emulator.

Not yet, but it is my understanding that SQL Mobile can be pre-loaded in ROM, but it's up to the OEM/Carrier. So some phones may have it, and others will not. :?

great first look observations Kris - now let's see who comes out with a phone first and I can bet my paycheck that it will be at least 1 full year before we see any phone in the US on this OS (sigh)....

Yeah, that's what I suspected. Anyway previously in WM2003 for smarpthone it was not possible to install SQL CE/Mobile at all, so anyway it is big progress that now with Windows Mobile 5.0 it is possible - it makes me extremely happy :P

Unfortunately the nice (I think) icon based start menu, as opposed to the list, is an OEM option. What they decide is what you get. There isn't a way for the user to switch AFAIK.

Hmm..interesting.

I wonder if some kind of registry setting would let you switch between the two modes. ;-)

Thanks Neil. Will check it out soon. Try and see if I can install applications. ;-) And sync my contacts, calendar etc and play with the emulator as if it were a real phone.

I like the fact that the emulator comes configured for "Fake Network". Lets you dial phone numbers. :-)

I too am hoping that the stability, the redesigned UI (icons have been renamed, regrouped and have been made more intutive) and the plumbing enabled for the developers will make this device a big hit. :-)

But I wish I had seen the following on the WM 5.0
• Notes (text version), I miss them badly
• File sync
• Multiple IE sessions
• Mail - delete all options for some of the folders
• Document Viewer (at least Word Document)
• And that annoying Call Info layout, where you have to scroll down to see the time when the call was placed

Congrats on getting the emulator to work with WM5. I was playing around with it yesterday too, and I installed several apps. I took screen shots too, but don't have anywhere to upload it to.

Pocket Mini Golf works great. PocketTV worked well too - it even plays movies. BetaPlayer crashed when I tried playing a DIVX AVI file, I bet they are using some unsupported API calls.

Because the emulator image is a barebones image, you don't get a file browser, which makes it difficult to install apps at first. I ended up launching IE and typing in file:///storage card/&lt;applicaiton>.cab to install apps. Then I ended up writing my own file browser (built off the MSDN sample code http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/SPFiles.asp) so I could poke around the directories some more.

Awesome tip...8)

I also noticed the lack of File Browser. And I could not get the ActiveSync 4.0 to pair with the Emulator.

I was thinking of emailing CAB files. Hopefully the file attachment security will not stop me from running them. ;-)

As for the start menu icons, yes you can change them to the traditional list. I just installed one of the registry editors out there, and came across this key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartMenu]
"GridView"

By default it is 1. This gives you the big icons.
Change it to 0 (zero), and it will give you the old list style.

Phew... lots of stuff to comment on in this thread. I'll see if I can keep it all straight :)

There are lots of subtle little changes here and there that you'll find as you really start using WM5.0. A lot of it doesn't show up in straight screenshot comparisons. When you start bouncing back and forth between apps, and really start playing with things like picture integration and whatnot, you'll find little things that make you smile.

The easiest way to sync your emulator with ActiveSync is using the Device Emulator Manager. If you have VS installed you can find it in c:\program files\microsoft device emulator\1.0\dvcemumgr.exe (I think that's the file name, but I'm sure I'm a little off). Launch it, right click on the emulator you want to connect, and select cradle. If AS doesn't fire up and connect, go into AS's connection dialog and make sure the COM port checkbox is enabled and it is set to DMA.

Installing applications in the emulator is easy using ActiveSync. You can use add/remove programs just like you would for a physical Pocket PC.

Once you have a file explorer installed on the emulator, use folder sharing to mount a folder on your harddrive as the storage card in the emulator. File > Options in the emulator, it's on the first page. Then you can dump stuff in there without having to actually copy them to the emulator.

SqlMobile does not ship in ROM for Windows Mobile 5.0. It, and .NET CF 2.0, are installable via CAB. This is the first release where SqlMobile has been supported on Smartphone devices.

Phew. I hope I didn't miss anything :)

How big is the new SQL Mobile? and for that matter, .NET CF 2? Installing these after the fact would chew into the precious RAM. The benefits of having these installed are unquestionable. However, people we want to know what they have to give up for it.

Remember that these get stored into persistent storage (ROM), not RAM, even on Pocket PC. One of the reasons you aren't seeing upgrades to existing devices is precisely because they don't meet storage requirements for a good experience using WM5.0.

SqlMobile is about 1.25MB I think. .NET CF 2 is about 2MB total. You can install them into your emulator and see.

I am very disappointed with the new Windows Mobile 5.0 for smartphone. It might add a lot of behind the scene enhancement, and have nicer looking icons and color scheme, but some important things haven't been corrected.

1. For the missed call, I still have to scroll to the second screen in order to see the time of the missed call. Why they put the type of phone call on the second item? This is something that is not important, and it is very easy to tell from the phone number. Stupid and stubborn.

2. For the contact detail page, why they put "Call Cell", "Call home", etc. This is just a waste of screen real estate. The old way is absolutely fine and intuitive enough, with h/m/w to destinate the type of phone number. The new way is counter intuitive.

3. I think the font size is still too big for such a small screen. They new version is using a default font that is narrower, I beleive. However, they should make it shorter also. Right now, I don't think there is any gain in screen real estate in terms of increase of screen resolution.

Very disappointed.

Finally I have a supporter. I am thinking of starting a petition to get that fixed. The most simplest thing to fix and it hasn't been fixed.

Good point. I would like to see icons against the phone numbers. But the text Call xxxxx is definitely a little over-intutive. ;-) And it is much better to have the phone, email and mailing address on the same screen.

Could be because I was too lazy to resize the QVGA screen shots to 220x176, so that readers can get a better idea of how the screen would look on a 2" display?

I will try and post couple of resized screen shots of the email and contact. Lets see how that looks. ;-)

The setting is held in the registry. Of course I don't know if this part of the registry will be locked by the operators thus requiring a signed application to change it. However you should be able to play with this with the emulator and the remote registry editor installed with VS2005. See here for details:-

1. For the missed call, I still have to scroll to the second screen in order to see the time of the missed call. Why they put the type of phone call on the second item? This is something that is not important, and it is very easy to tell from the phone number. Stupid and stubborn.

Finally I have a supporter. I am thinking of starting a petition to get that fixed. The most simplest thing to fix and it hasn't been fixed.

Just because of this, I am not ready to upgrade my 5600. Smartphone to me is phone first, pda second. However, looks like to me Microsoft keeps enhancing the PDA features, and make the phone itself not smart enough. I doubt any of their developer is using Smartphone, otherwise, I don't see why this problem hasn't been fixed. If the most basic feature of a phone hasn't been taken care, I don't care how much better the other features are. I am all for a petition like this.

Also, when I listen to my own voice message, the password I enter will show on the screen, and stay on the screen if I don't press other buttons like Home or something. I don't know if it is the same on WM5.

You'll have to wait until it's released on a phone and then buy that phone. There's a good couple months before we see it on the streets. ;)

Hey guys, what about "push" emails? I thought WM 5 was supposed to be the "Blackberry killer". And the first thing they would address (IMO) is ActiveSync's "pull" technology.

Unless something has changed over the past month, Windows Mobile 5.0 will support "push" but it is dependent on an update to Exchange Server.
